Are you interested in publishing your poetry, but do not know if it is good enough to be published? Writing poetry can be fun. It is even better to have it published for others to read. Here are a few ways to be sure that your poetry is good enough to publish and some tips for finding the right publications to submit it to.
Poetry Tip #1 – Read a lot of poetry. The best poems are written by people who are familiar with the works of other poets. By reading poems, you will be able to learn about different writing styles. They may even be inspirational. Read poetry written by classical poets, such as William Shakespeare, Edgar Allan Poe, and Emily Dickinson.
Poetry Tip #2 – Write from the heart. Write about something that you are passionate about. After deciding on the right topic, the rest should come fairly easily.
Poetry Tip #3 – Write every day. Practice, practice, and more practice. To call yourself a poet, you need to actually practice the art of writing poetry. Also, the more you write, the more you will learn about yourself and your writing style.
Poetry Tip #4 – Read books about writing so you can learn about different poetry styles. If you do not want to spend money on a book, check one out from the library. Otherwise, go online to find some more writing resources. Click here to learn about meter and rhythm.
Poetry Tip #5 – Perfect your poems by reading them. Then, re-read them. Check your spelling, grammar, and punctuation to be sure it is written exactly how you wish to present it to readers.
Poetry Tip #6 – After reading them to yourself, read your work aloud. The best way to know if something sounds right is by reading it out loud. Another way is to have someone else read it to you.
Poetry Tip #7 – Get feedback on your poems. If it is possible, go to poetry workshops and conventions. Otherwise, ask family members to read your poems and let them give honest critiques.
Poetry Tip #8 – Define your target audience – who would you like to read your poetry? Who will most benefit from the message you are trying to send? This will help in determining which publications to submit your poetry to.
Poetry Tip #9 – Do some research on different publications. The 2009 Poet’s Market is available for a discount at Amazon.com. Another way to find publications is to look online. One such online publication is Poetry.com, which also publishes some of the selected submissions in a hardcover collection of poetry.
Poetry Tip #10 – Submit to your favorite publications. Once you have done enough research, determine which one(s) best suit your needs (accounting for your target audience).
If you enjoy writing poetry, unless it is a private hobby, there is no need to keep your work to yourself. It is always fun to be able to read your poems in a publication. Follow these tips for perfecting your poetry, and submit it to the publication of your choice.
