There seems to be one constant in most NBA trade rumors. Most involve the Celtics. Now the question is, are the Celtics actually involved in these trade discussions, or are they just being thrown into wild rumors?
Most people know that the Celtics are desperate for talent, and that a veteran would help more than a rookie. It seems that most trade rumors involve the Celtics giving up some players and their fifth overall selection in the draft for almost every player currently on an NBA roster. They seem like the kid in school who is trying to give his things away just to get a friend for the day.
Now don’t get me wrong, if there is a trade out there that can help the Celtics, I am all for it. The problem is that most trade rumors would not help the Celtics, and would severely hurt them. A few examples are:
Kevin Garnett – giving up the number 5 pick and talent for a one-year rental would be devastating to the Celtics.
Shawn Marion – same position as Kevin Garnett.
Jermaine O’Neal – giving up the number 5 and talent for a player who does not want to be there, and will play like it would be terrible.
The best thing the Celtics can do is remember who they are. If they try and stretch just so that they can make the playoffs, it will hurt them in the long run. Sure Marion, O’Neal or Garnett would help them make the playoffs in the horrible East, but I thought a championship was the goal, or at least it used to be for the winningest team in NBA history. The Celtics don’t have a quick fix, and that is the real problem.
Gone are the days of Auerbach running this team, and sadly gone is Auerbach as well. Rick Pitino ruined this team almost beyond repair by drafting terrible players, trading the good ones for little in return and by ruining the structure of the front office. Just when it looked like the Celtics were coming back, with Eastern Conference Finals visits and division championships, they hired Ainge.
Danny Ainge seems to me like the guy who sits on the internet concocting trade rumors. The problem is that he has the authority to actually make these trades. He is like the guy you trade with in NBA Live to stack your team. Paul Pierce for Bonzi Wells? Sure! Al Jefferson for Kwame Brown? Of Course. He is pathetic. Sadly, the Celtics probably cannot get better with him in charge. I mean the guy has STARTED the rebuilding process four times by my count.
The Celtics need to keep the fifth pick and rebuild. A guy like Corey Brewer or Jeff Green could bring in some young talent that could help right away. They have to keep Jefferson, who is blossoming. They also need to stop the carousel at point guard and keep Rondo the starter. If they trade Pierce, which might be best for him and the organization, then they actually have to get value instead of giving him away for another Vin Baker or someone like that.
I don’t think the Celtics would be far off from being contenders again if they kept Jefferson, got Brewer or Green and traded Pierce for another young big man. They have a real chance. The problem is that Ainge will trade away picks for a one-year rental and the Celtics will have to start all over again with over-priced veterans that no one will take off their hands. If they trade the fifth pick for some of these terrible rumors, than they have no chance.
Please fire Danny Ainge.
