Television programs like NYPD Blue and Law & Order franchise have helped to make the New York Police Department more accessible to everybody and put a face behind the badge. That’s just television though and you generally won’t find Jimmy Smits working the beat anytime soon. However to some the New York City Police Department has always been an enrapturing world and many folks are highly interested in learning as much about the boys in blue as they can. For some who’d like to visit New York City, stopping in to a branch of the New York Police Department is not exactly par for the course; nor is it nearly as glamorous as one might fancy. However there is a place where you can go to learn all about the history of the New York Police Department; the New York City Police Museum! The New York City Police Museum is found in the same building which actually was the first New York City Police Department! So revered is this place that to locals and old timers, the site of the New York City Police Museum is known only as “100 Old Slip.”
100 Old Slip is downtown and was New York City’s first police station. However what many people don’t know about 100 Old Slip is that it has a history that dates back even further than being the first police station in New York City. The reason that this place is called “slip,” is because it never really existed; that is the land on which the building stands used to be a place where ships would unload their cargo. However with all the trash in New York City and the explosion of population, the City eventually closed down the dock and put all that waste to use! The area around the dock was filled in much the same as places like Battery Park City years later.
With a mission statement sworn to be dedicated to the preservation of the world’s largest police force, the New York City Police Museum has collections and educational programming, where folks can come and learn and explore. The New York City Police Museum also has displays which helps illustrate how police culture has evolved to meet the changing needs of the New York City community. The New York City Police Museum website also credits the New York City Police Museum with chronicling the history of New York City.
Giving visitors an insider’s look into the history and traditions of the largest police force in the country can be a joy for kids of all ages. The New York Police Department is over three centuries old and they continue to serve and protect; always.
