The Detroit Free Press is reporting that the National Hockey League Players Association has announced the formation of a committee to find a new executive director for the organization. The spot is currently vacant because of the ousting of the former executive director. The NHL Players Association has also come forward with the names of the members of the committee.
The board members will be Chris Chelios, Shawn Horcoff, Michael Cammalleri, Eric Lindros, and Robyn Regehr. There is not a definitive timetable that has been set up as to how long they have to find a replacement for the ousted former executive director.
Horcoff and Lindros just concluded their meetings with members of Fortune 500 companies to learn how it is that they search for new leaders for their companies. They also met with the leaders of other unions to have their input as well. They have shared their findings with the NHL Players Association, and all parties involved believe that they are ready to get things underway.
Ted Saskin had been the executive director for the NHL Players Association until Chris Chelios led the push to have him ousted. Right from the beginning, Chelios was concerned with Saskin because of the fact that many players believed that he was not elected properly.
Saskin was finally ousted when it was found that he had been reading the private emails of members of the NHL Players Association. There are many fans that believe that he was almost criminal in his actions.
There is no word yet as to when the committee will begin the deliberations that will be needed. Since the committee was just announced it is believed that they will begin their meetings fairly soon. The NHL Players Association is lucky since the members can start their meetings now.
It would behoove the committee to try to get the deliberations over with as soon as possible so that the members can rest up before the training camps start up in August. It could be disastrous if the meetings lasted until the beginning of the season because it would be hard for the players to all meet on a regular basis.
So far there has not been any official word as to who the potential candidates are that the committee will be looking at for the executive director position. We should look forward to many suggestions over the next few weeks as people speculate who could be on the committee’s watch list.
