In a press release, Nintendo reveals the gift function for the Wii Shop Channel. Still couldn’t find the prefect gift for your Wii-loving friends? Nintendo hopes that the new gift function for the Wii Shop Channel will be the answer.
The gift function is part of a new firmware update for the Nintendo Wii. To download the new firmware, take the following steps (an internet connection is required):
1. Choose the “Wii Options” button on the main menu
2. In the next screen, choose the “Wii Settings” option
3. Scroll to the third page of the next screen; it should say “Wii System Settings 3” at the top. Choose the “Wii System Update” option
4. Choose the “Yes” option when the Nintendo Wii prompts you to connect to the Internet in order to proceed with the update
The first thing you will notice after your Nintendo Wii has updated to the latest firmware in the new logo for the Wii Shop Channel. Inside the Wii Shop Channel, you will notice the new gift option along with the download option when you select a purchasable product.
In order to give a gift to someone, you must know their Nintendo Wii’s friend code, a 16-digit identification number, and your friend must know yours as well. The friend code for your Nintendo Wii is located on the Wii Message Board; simply go to the “Create Message” screen and choose the “Address Book” option. The “Create Message” screen is where you register friend codes from other Nintendo Wiis as well. Although hated by many, friend codes are used so that Nintendo can protect children from the vulgarity of the internet.
To purchase items on the Wii Shop Channel, you will need to buy Wii Points. The two ways to buy them are by buying and redeeming Wii Points Cards or buying Wii Points straight from the Wii Shop Channel with a credit card. Essentially, 100 Wii Points is equal to $1 USD. In addition, Wii Points can only be bought from increments for 1000 ($10), 2000 ($20), 3000 ($30) and 5000 ($50) when buying directly from the Wii Shop Channel; moreover, only the 2000 Wii Points Card are availble from retailers.
Wii Points are used to buy old-school games from the Virtual Console and programs from WiiWare. The selection from the WiiWare section as extremely limited but Nintendo promises new and original downloadable games in the future.
Just in time for the holiday season, the added gift function for the Wii Shop Channel is availble now in the latest firmware update for the Nintendo Wii.
