For many this past weekend was an exciting week of college football although for others it was a frustrating weekend. Many teams got upset this week and it shook up college football in a major way.
After the losses by West Virginia, Florida, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Rutgers, and Clemson we lost seven undefeated teams in college football this week. After all of this I’ve come to one conclusion, there are going to be no undefeated teams in the major conferences of college football this year.
From the very beginning a majority of the college football experts and fans have predicted that USC and LSU would go to the National Championship. If two teams go undefeated they’re definitely the two teams in college football that could do it, but I think they are both going to have trouble.
I’m not sure why USC dropped in one poll this week (last week I would’ve understood) after beating a good Washington team but the Washington game did show us one thing. USC is beatable on the road. Somewhere along the way I think USC is going to fall but toughness of the Pac-10 schedule plus the love the college football voters have for USC will probably keep them in the title match even with one loss.
LSU is more likely to go undefeated simply because the Western side of the SEC is not nearly as good as the East. It will be interesting to see what happens next week though when an angry Florida team comes to town. I think it’s possible that Auburn might have just pissed off Florida enough for them to beat LSU.
California is now number three and after beating Oregon and Tennessee I think they have as good an argument for number one as anybody. USC is the best team in the Pac-10 and if the Pac-10 is strong enough this year for USC to lose then it’s strong enough for California to lose too.
Nobody is giving the Big Ten much credit this year but now here they are with two college football teams in the top ten. The two teams have some pretty good wins. Ohio State has beaten a good Washington team and Wisconsin has wins over Iowa and Michigan State but neither has had a big test yet. One of them (I’m guessing Wisconsin) will go down when they play each other and even though Penn State has two conference losses and Michigan has two non-conferences losses I think either team could beat Ohio State or Wisconsin.
In the AP poll the highest ranked college football team from Florida is now South Florida. South Florida is a great story and if any one team goes undefeated I hope it is them. But I just don’t see it happening. South Florida still has to beat Rutgers and Louisville and UConn and Cincinnati are not pushovers either.
Boston College is the undefeated representative in the ACC. Who is going to beat Boston College? Honestly I don’t know, but I certainly don’t believe Boston College is an National Championship caliber team. In another article I predicted a Notre Dame upset. I could also see them losing to Virginia Tech, Florida State, Clemson or Miami.
Another good story this year has been the Kentucky Wildcats college football team. How strange is it to see them on top of the SEC East standings? It won’t last long though. The Wildcats’ wins over Louisville and Arkansas were nice but Kentucky will be lucky to come out of their next three games against South Carolina, LSU, and Florida with one win. Then the Wildcats end the season with Georgia and Tennessee.
Missouri has started the season undefeated and is not getting any attention. They probably don’t deserve attention with their extremely weak schedule though. Next week Missouri begins Big 12 play against Nebraska and they could easily lose four or five conference games.
Arizona State is a team that has gone under the radar that is playing pretty well. Arizona State’s win over Colorado suddenly looks better and they’ve beaten a good Oregon State team. But with Washington, California, Oregon, UCLA and USC all in a row on the schedule I don’t think Arizona State is going undefeated.
