We all know the story by now. Adam Dylan Leon, otherwise known as Yavuz Berke, stole a small aircraft and came joy riding down into the U.S. Now poor Yavuz Berke was supposedly suffering some mental problems. One being that he wanted to commit suicide. Wait! He wanted the U.S. Air Force to kill him.
Mike Kucharek, a spokesman for North American Aerospace Defense Command, is being reported in an article on Foxnews.com that very shortly after American F-16s started following the stolen plane, they knew they wouldn’t shoot it down. Why?
Kucharek said “We knew very early on it was a stolen aircraft, learned pretty early on he didn’t have hostile intent.” We didn’t want to “provoke” him. HUH?
I have some real problems with this. Looking at the picture of him on Foxnews.com you wouldn’t have any idea that he was upset. Heck, he virtually smiles at the camera. If he was so disturbed that he wanted to commit suicide via the U.S. F-16s why did he not make a crash landing? What kept him from running his stolen plane out of gas? What kept him from being combative and getting himself shot by the police? Come on, this guy no more wanted to kill himself than my German Shepard!
How did Mr. Kucharek know that Yavuz Berke wouldn’t toss something out of the window of that stolen plane? He was right over the bread basket of this country. A little something in powder form would have wiped out a goodly chunk of livestock and people. How did they KNOW he didn’t have that capability?
I have a problem with this lax way of thinking. Do I think the stolen plane should have been shot down? Absolutely! When Berke refused to respond to the requests to put down, he and his stolen plane should have met with the F-16’s might. They should still be out there picking up pieces. Why? Because when we are lax like this, we end up stung like on 9-11.
If you were a terrorists sitting on your couch watching this. Are you thinking “gee, I’m scared to even think about crossing into American airspace!”? Or are you laughing saying “gee, that was easy enough!” Since when do we let stolen planes from other countries violate our air space? No shoot down must be the accepted method of handling stolen planes. Run them out of gas, yeah, that will teach them.
For those who say that this was a mentally disturbed man who just went cruising for a chance to get shot down in his stolen airplane, I say what if he had had something to toss out the window of that stolen plane? What if he dropped a chemical, biological germs or even a bomb? This mental case managed to penetrate to the heart of America with his little stolen plane. If that doesn’t make you nervous, what will? And while we’re at it, how many people thought the terrorists that took down the towers were indeed terrorists?
No shoot down. NO SHOOT DOWN!? Terrorists must be shaking their heads and taking notes. Note to self..we can use a small stolen plane not a jet airliner.
