You would think that if you shopped at a dollar store that everything you found would be a good deal. That however is not necessarily true. Here are some dollar stores items that you may want to purchase elsewhere.
Dollar Store Stationary: A pack of pens or pencils priced at $1.00 may seem like a good deal, but the local drugstore may sell that same pack for .79 cents. This is especially true at back to school time when every store has these items on sale. You will be able to find many stationary items priced at two/$1.00. Save your dollar store stationary purchases for when you are in a hurry, or when other store prices seem too high.
Dollar Store Food: Some of the food items at the dollar store are priced will. For example, a box of Ho Ho’s is normally $1.29, so getting it at the dollar store instead makes perfect sense. The same goes for cake mix and icing. However, many items at the dollar store sell for less than $1.00. So do not buy mustard, spices (unless they are 2/$1.00), bottled water (unless it is cold),single bottles of soft drinks, potato chips, and other such item without first checking the closest grocery store.
Dollar Store Underwear: If you can purchase eight pair of underwear at Target for 4.99, why would you pay a dollar a pair at the dollar store? Some undergarments there are priced well, but be careful as some dollar stores separate a Hanes pack and sell them separately. The same goes for socks.
Dollar Store Gift Bags: At one time, you could not find a better price for gift bags and boxes than at the dollar store. However, the grocery and department stores now sell them for less. If you are buying a small to medium size gift bag, without a design, you will find other stores sell them for less, or even in a pack. Tissue paper, steamers, and small gift boxes can also be purchased for less elsewhere.
Dollar Store Children’s Toys: While most of the children’s toys found at dollar stores cannot be found for less elsewhere, they are still not a great deal because they last for about one hour before breaking or declared lame. Many of the items may also have safety hazards. I high caution against every buying a dollar store item as a gift for a child and discourage children from buying these items for themselves. The only exception would be to purchase picture books and coloring books.
Items from the dollar store that are good deals: Tools, (though not great quality), most kitchen utensils, dishtowels, garbage pails, cleaning products, soap, and car accessories, greeting cards, key chains, and hair accessories purchased at dollar stores are usually great deals.
