I’m an avid reader, I love books, I have literally hundreds of books in my collection but finding good reading material isn’t always easy. As a college student I’m having to do a lot of reading and writing, so when I need a break I like to read fictional books, something fun and exciting to relax and give my brain a break.
I’ll admit my favorite genre is romance but not just any type of romance will do though. Yes, I enjoy the love story but I’d like there to be more to it then just sex, sex and more sex. I want there to be a solid story with a lot of action (not that kind) and great characters. I want to be able to see the story play out inside my head, be able to experience it and live it through the book.
If you enjoy romance novels like I do but hate the overly sexed-up scenes and gag-worthy lines you’ll want to keep reading. Don’t be fooled by the more well-known names, just because they’re popular doesn’t mean all of their books are great. After years of reading and trying out various authors I’ve found a handful that I absolutely love and have read just about every book they’ve written.
Number one on my list and my favorite author is Karen Marie Moning, the woman is sheer genius. To date she’s written nine books with the tenth one to be released in October 2007. If you enjoy historical romance with a twist of fantasy and Irish/Scottish mythology thrown in you’ll love her Highland series. There’s currently seven books to her Highland series and more to come. I love how she keeps the background story through out each book, it keeps the base of the story alive. Moning is a superb writer, she has a way of describing each character, scenery, scenes, mood and gesture without being too overly descriptive that you can just see the story play out in your mind.
I also love how even though one story for a group of character ends they’re not completely forgotten but are sometimes incorporated into another book and occasionally play a role as well. The only story that sort of stands alone is “Into the Dreaming,” which was part of a novella and only a year ago re-released on it’s own. As of right now, Moning is taking a break from her Highland series and working on a new one, the Fever series. There currently is only one book from the Fever series, the second installment is set to release in October 2007. Moning mentions that the Fever series isn’t exactly a romance story, there are no sex in the first book but there will be eventually. It’s much like how Lord of the Rings was written, it’s an on going story. If you’d like to know more about her books, upcoming releases and news or more about the author, go to www.karenmoning.com.
Another great romance author is Sunny, yes, it’s simply Sunny, like Madonna, no last names. I discovered her books by accident, I was waiting for Moning’s next installment and needed something to read so I went searching. I had picked up a book because the cover looked interesting and after reading the first two pages it seemed worth buying. I didn’t know it was a novella until I got home, I got three short paranormal romance stories in one book. All three stories were good but I enjoyed the last one the most, it was titled “Mona Lisa Three.”
After reading “Mona Lisa Three,” I wondered if the author had any more books that were similar or maybe another installment because it didn’t sound like the story ended. I went to the authors site and found a list of her books, I’ve only read the Mona Lisa series so far and the next edition is set to release in August 2007 as a novella titled, “Mona Lisa Betwining.” Sunny is a paranormal romance writer but she also writes contemporary romances as well.
The Mona Lisa series tells the story of a half-blood Monere Queen name Mona Lisa who’s discovery who she is and what she is, as well as learning about the Monere race and how things work. The Monere people are a race that came from the moon hundreds of years ago, they’re nocturnal beings that get their energy from the moon. The race is ruled by a handful of Queens who take multiple lovers. The males gain their strength and power by mating with the Queen. There are a lot of Monere laws that Mona Lisa doesn’t like and she with the help of her new family are setting out to change them. I highly recommend the Monere series, it’s a very unique story, with lots of fighting, plenty of sex scenes for obvious reasons and many enduring characters. The next author I would recommend is Gena Showalter, she’s fairly new to me and I’ve only read one of her books thus far and loved it. Showalter also mainly writes paranormal romances but she has a few contemporary ones as well. She’s known for her magical stories of Atlantis and mythical beings who find love with humans. I read “The Nymph King,” and fell in love with the characters because they each had a very distinct personality. Like Moning, Showalter’s characters are mentioned or pop up in other books as well. If you’d like a listing of her books or more information about the author go to www.genashowalter.com.
There’s an author for every flavor of romance you’re into. If you’re the type that likes historical romance with reoccurring characters, time traveling, men in kilts, druids and faeries, you’ll love Karen Marie Moning’s books. If you’re wanting something completely unique all together I’d suggest Sunny’s Monere series and if you have a love for all things mythological then Gena Showalter is definitely for you.
