When I started having some health issues, with muscle spasms and pain in my legs, I went to my doctor. After a multitude of tests and MRI’s, we ruled out many causes, which was a relief. My doctor told me to increase my Vitamin C and take a good multiple vitamin.
Several months later I visited a highly recommended massage therapist, who is a preferred provider for one of the insurance companies in town (our former insurance company). Massage Therapists have to take courses in nutrition, and after our session, she recommended a few supplements for me to help my muscles and nervous system, and said that the NOW brand was one of the best. NOW supplements are sold through a local health food store.
One of the supplements I have been on is NOW B-12 Lozenges with Folic Acid. They come 250 to a bottle (orange label and purple cap), and the bottle says it’s good for Nervous System Health. The back part of the label has a picture showing the actual size of the lozenge, but in reality they are a little bigger than the picture.
The lozenges are colored pink, and smell like cherries. My massage therapist and the owner of the health food store both told me to hold the lozenge under the tongue until gone, but the label says to “chew lozenge or hold in mouth until dissolved”. I tried letting them dissolve in my mouth, but it was taking forever, so I chew them up very thoroughly. They do have a pleasant cherry taste and are slightly sweet.
One lozenge contains 100 mcg of folic acid, which is 25% of the USDA amount, and it also contains 1.0 mg (1,000 mcg) or 16,667% % Daily Value. The Vitamin B-12 is derived by natural fermentation. Other ingredients include fructose, cellulose, sorbitol, stearic acid (vegetable source), natural cherry flavor, magnesium stearate (vegetable source), and silica.
The label reads: “Vitamin B-12 is a water soluble vitamin necessary for the maintenance of a healthy nervous system and for the metabolic utilization of fats and proteins. B-12 is also essential for the systhesis of DNA during cell division and therefore is especially important for rapidly multiplying cells, such as blood cells. In addition, adequate intake of Vitamin B-12, along with Folic Acid and Vitamin B-6, encourages healthy serum homocysteine levels, thereby supporting cardiovascular health”.
NOW B-12 contains no salt, starch, yeast, wheat, gluten, soy, milk, egg, shellfish or preservatives. It is considered a vegetarian/vegan product.
My massage therapist recommended the NOW brand because she felt they were superior, putting their products through stringent quality control measures. NOW not only tests their own products in house, but they are also tested by independent laboratories. They routinely check their products for quality control.
The company has been recognized in several ways. NOW International, Inc. has been named a 2009 Exporter of the Year award winner by ThinkGlobal Inc., publisher of Commercial News USA, the official export promotion magazine of the U.S. Commerce Department.
For the second year in a row, NOW Foods was honored with Whole Foods Magazine’s highest accolade, the Natural Choice Award, for Best Full Line of Supplements, according to the April 2009 issue.
To conclude, these are superior supplements, and for those who (like me) don’t like to swallow pills, the chewable version is a geat alternative.
