We have two Chihuahuas. One is a normal weight 5-6 lbs, the other looks like a loaf of bread on sticks. He was almost 11 lbs when we got him. He also had genetic defects, luxating patella. This is a knee joint that blows and being overweight just exacerbated the condition. It was extremely important for his pphysical well being that we reduce his weight.Due to the knee problem, exercise had to be limited so his food intake was the more likely way to reduce his weight. He is now about 8 lbs since we put him on the Nutro Natural Choice Lite Dry Dog Food.
We chose Nutro Choice Lite Dry Dog Food for several reasons. The Nutro company philosophy is simple: They constantly strive to provide better ingredients and better nutrition for better health, no matter what the cost. The crude protein content is 14%. A calorie amount is given on the package but since our dogs ar small and only one is overweight we are really guess-timating the calories they ar receiving. For better digestion we break their meals into morning and evening servings. The calories in Nutro are 14% less then regular kibble and we only add low calorie food to the kibble, chicken broth, Parmesan cheese or cooked carrots. We also give them vegetable treats or at best one little biscuit mid day.
Nutro contains Glucosamine and Chondroitin for healthy joints.
Nutro has natural ingredients with vitamins and minerals .
Nutro is scientifically formulated for healthy skin and shiny coat
Especially important is the fact Nutro has no chicken by-products
If you do a little investigative reading you will find that by products can include beaks, feet, ligaments, lungs, udders and other parts that could possibly be diseased or cancerous animal parts. Pet food provides a market for slaughterhouse offal and grains considered unfit for human consumption. Also, the cooking process, rendering, extruding does not destroy the hormones used to fatten livestock or the barbiturates used to euthanize them. Many dog foods are warehoused for extreely long periods of time and are treatred to withstand this with products to prevent them from becoming rancid bt not products you’d want your pets to consume.

Both veterinarians and nutritionists recommend reduced calorie diets for overweight and less active dogs. Nutro can be served dry or moistened. We compared Nutro to many dog foods on the market. We were well aware of all the warnings lately. We even returned food that we had purchased directly through our vet because when we read the ingredients we found the food contained peanut hulls. At one point we seriously considered just cooking for them ourselves but there are too many important ingredients to try and fill their health requirements. We looked into the raw diet that some breeders are expounding but weren’t comfortable with this either. Oddly enough two of the top brands Eukanuba and Science Diet had ingredeitns we were not pleased with.
So,if you’ve been startled by the food recalls for dogs and are concerned with giving your animals a healthy diet do some research, read your labels and look into the Nutro brand.
