Om Shanti Om is a Bollywood film (film from India) that was recently released to the United States. The film is a musical directed by Bollywood director and choreographer Farah Khan, who also made an appearance in the film. The film stars Shah Rukh Kahn and Deepika Padukone. The film also has many special appearances by other Bollywood stars.
Om Shanti Om is the second film that Farah Khan has directed, the first being Main Hoon Na. Farah has a much longer list of choreography credits with her first being Waqt Hamara Hai in 1993. Some of the other and more notable films that Farah has choreographed include Virasat, Duplicate, and Fiza along with many others for a total of 62 movies in just 14 years. While the number may sound incredible Bollywood produces many more films then the U.S. does every year.
The movie Om Shanti Om itself reminds me of That ’70s Show, probably because the film is set in the ’70s. Khan, who plays Om, is working in the film industry and wants to make it big. Om is in love with the film star Shantipriya (Padukone).
Om gets to go to the premiere of Shantipriya new movie and gets a ticket by accident but then it is discovered that it is not his but as he leaves the his gaze meets Shantipriya.
The two will meet again as both are in a movie together with Om as a minor role. Om saves Shantipriya from a fire that happens on set and become friends. Om’s friend tells Shantipriya that Om is a big star in Southern India but she finds this is not true but thinks he is a star to her.
Om finds out that Shantipriya is secretly married and pregnant. But her husband wants to marry another woman to get the money for the film Om Shanti Om. The husband gets mad that things are not going as expected and burns the set with Shantipriya there. Om sees this and tries to save her but can’t as some guards of Shantipriya husband beat him. Both die in the accident.
The film skips another 30 years ahead with Om reincarnated as the child of a celebrity’s wife who found Om and took him to the hospital that night. The new Om is going to make a remake of the movie. Om knows wants to get Shantipriya the now big shot producer to admit to his guilt and wants to use the Shantipriya look alike to do it. But Shantipriya finds out about the plan and they confront each other.
Shantipriya husband gets hit and when he wakes up Shantipriya’s look alike starts to talk and reveals that he had come back to bury the body under the set. Om realizes it is not the look alike but Shantipriya ghost. Shantipriya ghost kills her ex-husband and says goodbye to Om.
The movie was a bit of a surprise with the death of the main characters half way through. It also follows all other Bollywood films in following the same ideas as all the other movies with little originality, just the same films re-made with slight changes. The story is hard to accept if you do not believe in reincarnation as well. Overall, if you like Bollywood films, you will like it. If you’ve never seen a Bollywood film, don’t watch this one, though.
