The Humane Society of the United States isn’t your local humane society chapter. It is an organization that fights for the rights of animals and their well being. Similar to Peta, people for the ethical treatment of animals, but much larger and much more organized. There are some very persuasive and prestigious people not only backing it, but also becoming involved in the situations that arise when it comes to an animal in crisis.
People who are dedicated to a cause of this caliber are not going to be carnivorous meat eaters, but rather vegans or vegetarians. This has got a lot of people who work in the livestock trade nervous. They feel that the goal of animal rights activists is to liberate livestock from their bondage. And because animals shouldn’t be held captive to work for man, a new term has been coined to identify what people who profit and gain from the use of animals are doing. They are showing “Speciism” towards animals. In short it means prejudice. Just because an animal is different from a human doesn’t mean that all species aren’t equal. All species have the same right to exist and to live free. Those who go against this belief are showing “Speciism.”
The livestock business has gotten a bad reputation over the years not because of the individual farmer or breeder, but more so from the slaughterhouses. Family-run farms or individual livestock producers usually take very good care of their animals. They want them to be healthy because in the long run they stand to gain. Slaughterhouses don’t care about the health of their animals because they have the money to replace a sick or dead one. The sad truth about chicken farms and slaughterhouses is that the giant corporation, which owns them feels that chickens are cheap to replace if something happens to them. Hogs, sheep, goats, and cows cost a little more to replace, but that’s all right to the big corporation.
The treatment of animals living in this type of environment is horrific and cruel and something should be done about it. The only foreseeable course of action against such corporations should be to change laws and enforce them shutting the corporation down if they don’t comply. Distribution of the animals could then be given to individuals or family-run farms that could provide the animals with the best of care.
With the rise of vegans and vegetarians one might think that there aren’t as many carnivores, but the demand for meat is growing. This could be due to the steady rise of human populations.
