When I can, I try to live a pretty natural, fairly eco-friendly life. Most things that I purchase are weighed against environmental concerns and my own healthy living standards. If possible, I look for naturally made products that do not contain a myriad of chemicals and toxic ingredients, and I opt for organic when I can afford it.
So, imagine my surprise when I looked at a bottle of personal lubricant and realized that it was loaded with questionable ingredients.
After that unpleasant surprise, I started noticing just how many personal lubricants are loaded with parabens. One water based lubricant that was billed as “natural and balanced for delicate skin” had all four common parabens in the ingredients list: methylparaben, ethylparaben, butylparaben, and propylparaben.
To be fair, the jury is still out on the safety of parabens. While many people feel that they are an unsafe and toxic additive to cosmetics and other personal care products, other people feel that they may be safe.
I prefer to err on the side of caution, assuming that if any studies have come out indicating that parabens are unsafe, I will avoid them until I hear strong evidence to the contrary.
According to the thegoodhuman.com, parabens have been linked to estrogen mimicking and could lead to some very unpleasant reproductive issues. Not something to take lightly, especially considering where on the body personal lubricant is applied.
There are also people who are extremely sensitive to parabens, and contact with them can lead to a nasty allergic reaction. This becomes a particularly important issue when you consider using parabens on delicate tissues.
Not something I would want in my body at all. So I began my quest to find personal lubricants, both water and silicone based, that ditched the parabens.
Water based personal lubricants
I was surprised by how many water based lubricants included at least one paraben in the ingredients list. However, I did manage to locate the following four brands, all paraben free:
Wet Naturals Beautifully Bare
Astroglide Glycerin & Paraben Free
Silicone based personal lubricants
After reviewing the unsettling ingredients lists on dozens of bottles of water based lubricants, I was surprised to find that most silicone based lubricants did not contain parabens at all. Silicone is also an excellent choice for those individuals who may be allergic to water based lubricants. Some of the brands that I found during my search were:
Wet Naturals Silky Supreme
