Every September, the skies of Texas are filled with colorful hot air balloons. These balloons are part of the annual Plano Balloon Festival held at Oak Point Park in Plano Texas. The event is sponsored by EDS Credit Union. The festival dates this year are September 21, 22, 23, 2007.
The Plano Balloon Festival has become one of the most anticipated events in the area. Balloons of every color of the rainbow are present. There are always at least 7-8 special shapes other than the traditional hot air balloon shape. Some of the special shapes this year that the kids will enjoy are Airabelle the Cow, Cheshire Cat, Energizer Bunny, Felix the Cat, Miss Daisy, Pandy, Upside Down Humpty Dumpty, and Woodrow C. Greenleaf.
One of the things I enjoy the most every year is the sight and sound of the burners being ignited to fill the ballons as the sun starts to set. As the balloons fill with air, they glow with the light from the burners and it’s an awesome sight to behold.
The Plano Balloon Festival attracts about 70,000 people on average. It is a wonderful event for the entire family, with activities for all ages. There is a kid zone area with have all kinds of fun things for your little ones to enjoy. You can pay $20 and they can play all day, or you can purchase individual tickets for $2 each. There will be inflatables in the bounce house, a rock climbing wall, free make-and-take items in the craft area, face painting, and a lot of other fun things.
The KDFW Fox 4 stage is a big attraction as well. Local entertainers perform each year, and will be on stage Saturday from 8am – 6pm and Sunday 8am – 5pm. One of Dallas’s favorite classic rock bands Moving Colors will be performing Saturday night.
New this year will be a mock up of the hit TV show “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader”, so be sure all your 5th graders make their way to the area and join in on the fun!
Kraig Parker will also be in concert this year, so if you’re an Elvis fan you won’t want to miss him! He is known as one of the best Elvis impersonators in the business and is famous from Las Vegas to London.
Saturday night you can also see a spectacular fireworks show, which is said to be the best fireworks show in town.
You can purchase a balloon ride this year, and you can purchase tickets in advance or at the ride booth near the main entrance. Project prices for rides are $250.00 a person.
