Recently my family was forced to purchase a paternity test. After the break up of my brother and his girlfriend over an affair, we were all unsure if his newborn son was really his. Getting a paternity test done through the hospital or the court system can take weeks and sometimes even months to get back your results. We searched the internet for any alternatives. We came across a product that was very unknown to us. It was a take at home paternity test. I never knew that paternity tests were available for home use. It was great that you can take care of your personal business at home. Although I came across many different websites that offered a variety of different paternity tests, we decided to stick with a company called Family Genetics. In the end of this of this whole ordeal, I had some things I loved about Family Genetics and their paternity test, and other things that I didn’t like.
Family Genetics is a company that provides you with a completely free paternity test kit. The only thing that you pay for is the shipping. They offer a fully accredited laboratory that will process your order the day that it arrives at their site. Family Genetics mission is to “provide superb quality, private DNA identity and relationship testing at a reasonable price”. They say that they are scientists, technologists and business people who have come together to bring their consumers a quality service with a no-nonsense product. I found out later that this is not completely true.
Although I went through Family Genetics to provide me with a paternity test kit and service, there are also many other types of DNA tests they provide. The other’s include Maternity, Siblingship, Twin Zygosity, Grandparentage, Aunt/Uncle, Missing Parent and a DNA profile. Isn’t technology amazing? There’s accuracy guarantee is what really got me interested. Family Genetics claim to have a probability greater than 99.999% when it comes to the results of the DNA tests. For the paternity test, you have a choice of take samples of just the father and child in question (which is what we did) or for even better results, you can include the mother’s DNA sample. If they are unable to give you accurate results for whatever reason, they are more then happy to refund 50% of the cost of the test.
Although the paternity test kit is completely free, there is a free for the laboratory service. The paternity test is not as expensive as I thought It would be. It costs us $79.00 to the father and the child in questions paternity test results. If you include the mother’s DNA, it will cost an extra $25.00. To find out if your child belongs to you, this is nothing. Depending on what kind of shipping you choose when ordering the kit, you will receive your kit rather quickly. The kit comes in a discreet envelope. Inside you will find a folder containing cheek swabs for up to 3 people. It also provides you will easy to follow instructions as well as and order form and a prepaid envelop to send your DNA samples back to the lab. Once the laboratory analyzes your samples, they will prepare a short report and send your results back to you. It’s quite easy.
Although for the most part, Family Genetics is a great service, I did encounter a few problems throughout the process. I ordered the paternity test kit through 2 day shipping. It arrived at my home 3 days later which was great. I then helped my brother complete the order form and provide the samples. We sent it out the next day. The Family Genetics website said that the process the order the same day that it arrives. I figured it may take 2 to 3 days to arrive at their laboratory, then they would complete the DNA test and send back the results. Well, it took the laboratory nearly 4 long weeks to get the results back to my home. That is not the only problem I came across. After 3 weeks, I tried contacting Family Genetics. First, I sent them an e-mail simply asking what was going on with the order and when the results would be coming back to me. I never received a reply from them. Next, I tried calling the 1-800 number that they provided on their website. The first few times I tried calling this number it went straight to an answering machine. The machine told me to leave my name and a message and they would return my call. Well, they never did. I called again later that day and got a women who answered the phone in Spanish! I said “uhm, hello?” and she then began to talk in English and told me that she was busy and should call back later. A few days later I tried calling just to see if it was still going to send me to a machine or a Spanish talking lady and a Representative finally answered the phone! I then asked her to give me some information on the paternity test. Her response was that the paternity test wasn’t in my name and that she can’t give me any information, click. Well, their service may be great but their customer service is terrible!
Besides those few annoying glitches, my family and myself was very happy to have the results back. Family Genetics did fulfill our needed service and we were extremely grateful that their are services out there that are easy and can be done in the privacy of your own home. When we received our results, they were the over 99.999% accuracy that we had hoped for. If you are looking for paternity test services or other DNA tests, go to www.dnatesting.net for the Family Genetics website or check out some others on the internet. It’s great to finally know the information you are looking for and this paternity test really made our family come together. By the way, in case you all are wondering, he is the father of my nephew!
