Soft drink addiction is a very serious problem that is often overlooked in a world of nicotine, coffee, and food addictions. Soft drinks can be a very serious problem if you do not drink them in moderation. Here are some steps to take to quit soft drinks forever.
Treat the soft drink addiction like an addiction. Most people have a difficult time realizing they are addicted to soft drinks. If you drink more than three a day, then you are certainly in the high risk category. The first step to beating soft drink addiction is to realize that it is a serious addiction. As such, you must avoid situations where you will be tempted. Soft drinks are everywhere, so this is particularly tough to do. Pay attention and avoid the temptation for soft drinks where possible. For example, send your spouse or friend to the store for you when possible. Skip that midday trip past the drink machines and take the steps instead. Opportunities are everywhere if you pay attention to limit your soft drink visibility.
Learn the wonders of water. This is probably the single best way to quit soft drinks out there. I used to hate water with a passion, but have learned to love it over time. The only reason it tastes bad to those that are addicted, is because it is not loaded with sugar and fake taste. Give yourself a regiment of six glasses of water per day for a month. Your feelings about water will change. It will start to taste like nectar to you after awhile.
Exercise when you feel stressed out. Like with any addiction, you will go through withdrawal symptoms. These might include a headache, irritable feelings, and nervousness. You may even feel like screaming or crying. I know I suffered all of these when I quit soft drinks. Know that these symptoms will pass, and they pass much quicker if you get on the treadmill. Exercise of any kind will help you through the soft drink withdrawal symptoms quicker than anything else.
Try to enjoy a diet soda occasionally. Diet soft drinks will taste very bad for awhile, so go ahead and expect this. Over time, the diet sodas will start to taste much better to you as a change up from water. Do not over do the diet sodas either though, as they contain many harmful additives as well. Have one as a treat now and then to give you some flavor in your life.
Drink fruit juices for your sugar fix. Make sure that you are drinking pure juices though. You do not want to get sucked into drinking the fruit drinks that are loaded with sugar, or you might as well keep drinking the sodas. Pure fruit juices are good for you in moderation, so the sugar is negligible.
Finally, give yourself a reward to work towards when you reach that goal. Having a special reward for yourself at the end of the battle with soft drinks is always a good motivator. Make sure it is something that is worth fighting for, so you will have some true motivation. For those that drink several soft drinks a day, save that money instead of buying sodas. In a few short months, you could have a new big screen television and better health as well.
