Reality TV has been going strong ever since the first episode of Real World on MTV 17 years ago. It became more of a national phenomenon when Survivor rose to popularity in the early 2000s. Many Reality TV shows have come and gone since then, but It seems like America can’t get enough of it… Or have they? Today’s reality TV shows are more like something that we love to hate.
The Bachelor, for example reached a whole new level of sleaze, when the previously jilted Jason Mesnick was on a search for new wife. As adorable as he was, I couldn’t stomach his lean-in-and-slob (kiss) technique he used when he was incapable of having an honest conversation with a woman. If his lack of tact, self respect, and respect for the women weren’t bad enough, he chose one woman, only to dump her for another on national TV.
I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here has currently taken over the entire summer viewing schedule. It features numerous semi, celebrities, used to be celebrities, and non-celebrities. Frangela is comedy and radio duo (one of whom co-starred with Miley Cyrus in Best of Both Worlds). Speidi is a Newly Wed Duo from an MTV reality-ish show. Sanjaya is the Indian guy from American Idol a few seasons ago. Janice Dickenson is the World’s Oldest Supermodel… really. There is also a disgraces politician’s wife, a former basketball star, a Baldwin, and some others. It’s like survivor, only with bigger egos.
John and Cate plus 8 has made every dysfunctional family alive say “Thank God”, someone’s home is more dysfunctional than mine. It’s not like they showed anything distasteful on the show, but between the parental tension, and the mom’s barking, it’s a wonder the Sextuplets and their older twin sisters aren’t already getting therapy.
Dancing with the Stars is actually quite entertaining. The reason it works is because it is more about skill than drama, though drama isn’t excluded. There have been divorces, coupling, and lot’s of injuries to keep us entertained.
There are other Reality shows that are more miss than hit like Celebrity Apprentice with more egos and bad behavior. There are still a few that are hits for now like American Idol and America’s Got talent.
Overall, any of the shows that showcase anything other than raw talent and development of said talent is a waste of time for most, and a guilty pleasure for scores who wouldn’t dare admit it. Personally, I’m over it and I suspect many other American’s are too. I think it’s time TV writers got a raise… who’s with me?
