As I have stated before I love trying out new places and new things, on the other hand my husband is much more of a skeptic than me, and prefers to stick to what he knows. Papa Murphy’s Take And Bake Pizza isn’t new, but we had never tried it, my husband’s belief has always been if we are ordering pizza it should be cooked when we get it. Also, we live in Louisville, Kentucky a place where no pizza in town beats the pizza you can get at Wick’s Pizza and Pub, a local favorite. I have tried many times to get my husband to try Papa Murphy’s and today he finally gave in.
We stopped by the Middletown location at 12535 Shelbyville Road in the Eastgate Shopping Center. Once in side, my kids were amazed by the idea of getting to see their pizzas being made, as the pizzas are made fresh to order. All of the ingredients looked amazing, and it was hard to choose what you wanted to order. We are a family of six, with a growing teenage son, so it takes a lot of pizza to feed us.
In the end we decided to order a family size Papa’s Favorite which comes with Pepperoni, Italian Sausage, Ground Beef, Black Olives, Mushrooms, Green Peppers, and Mixed Onions, but we had them leave the Black Olives and Onions off. We also ordered a family size pizza with Pepperoni, Italian Sausage, and Bacon, and a Cinnamon Wheel for dessert.
There were two employees in the restaurant who were both very helpful, and explained to me exactly how to cook the pizzas without me having to ask, which I thought was a nice touch, as many people may feel silly asking.
As I said earlier, the ingredients were fresh, and looked amazing. They did not skimp at all when it came time to make our pizza, and I actually asked the lady making our pizza to take some of the mushrooms and green peppers back off. I was also surprised at how large a family size pizza really is. The only thing that I didn’t quite like was that they only wrap your pizza in plastic wrap, which isn’t very tight, and makes it difficult to get the pizza home without disrupting this. I am sure this is probably a cost issue, and it is there way of keeping the costs down, but a box, or an easy way to transport the pizzas would be a nice touch.
Once at home the pizzas had to be baked one at a time at 425 degrees for about fifteen minutes. The first pizza cooked was the one with Pepperoni, Italian Sausage, and Bacon, and it was delicious. The second pizza had the green peppers and mushrooms on it, and was harder to bake, in order to get the mushrooms and green peppers done I had to cook it longer than I wanted to, and the crust was crisper than I would have preferred. If I order from Papa Murphy’s again I will just buy two of the pizzas with the meats on it, and forget the green peppers and mushrooms.
We did not eat the Cinnamon Wheel right away, so it had to be refrigerated until later on in the evening, when we purchased it, it was already prepared and was in a cooler on display, so I have no idea when it was prepared, there was a place on the tag for a date but no date was listed. It was a little slimy when it came out, and it was cooked on 400 degrees for about ten minutes. It was good, but I am also not sure I would get it again. There were other dessert items available such as cookie dough, and dessert pizzas which I would probably try instead.
Another item that we did not purchase, but I would like to try was the Cheesy Bread. It was already prepared and was in the same cooler as the Cinnamon Wheel, it looked absolutely delicious.
All the pizzas were good, but as with any restaurant you have to find what suits your personal tastes, which takes trying items out until you find the ones that are right for you. I will most definitely order their pizzas again.
