San Francisco is known for its many restaurants featuring local produce and the ever-eclectic California touch. For tastes more closely associated with the Midwest, you may have to look a little deeper.
If you’re craving comfort food in San Francisco, you can’t go wrong by going to either the Bashful Bull, 1222 Noriega, just west of 19th Avenue (Highway 1), or the Bashful Bull Too, 3600 Taraval, north of Sloat and east of the Great Pacific Highway. Both Bashful Bulls are located in the Sunset/Parkside District. Both Bulls have received mixed reviews on different online sites. However, every time I’ve eaten there, the food has been good, plentiful, and reasonably priced. The wait staff is friendly and quick to fill your order or your coffee cup.
I first discovered Bull Too in April 2005. We were staying at the Ocean Park Motel (Sloat and 46th) and it was recommended by the motel owner. It’s within walking distance of the motel, and is only a few blocks from Ocean Beach.
Keep in mind that both Bulls serve diner food. This is good, old comfort food, plain and simple–no chi-chi California grub here, although they do include avocado and other Californian vegetables in their offerings. I have never strayed far from the breakfast or lunch menu, and have never even looked at the dinner menu. For breakfast, choose from one of their many omelettes. My favorite is the vegetarian with spinach, tomato, mushroom and onion, and I have them add Swiss cheese. The omelettes are huge and come with your choice of potato and a plate of toast. Here, the home fries are much better than the hash browns. I’ve also had the steak and eggs. The steak is not bad for a breakfast steak. For lunch, try the hamburgers-they’re massive (1/2 pound), and unlike a lot of restaurants, here they will prepare them rare. The toppings are too many to list. Also, I would highly recommend the French fries. They’re crispy on the outside, and hot and soft on the inside, just the way I like them. The coffee flows non-stop at the Bashful Bulls, which is a good thing if you’re staying in a motel room with only a two-cup coffee maker, and you need a caffeine rush after a long walk on the beach.
A frugal person can still have a filling meal for less than $7. This is a great place to go if you’re on a budget or if you’re in a hurry. Locals appear to like it.
Both Bashful Bull and Bashful Bull Too are open on all major holidays. We ate our Christmas dinner there last year! They also accept all major credit cards. The next time you’re in San Francisco and crave diner food, give them a try.
