I usually choose the same brand of couscous every time I go shopping, by Near East. I recently came across a different brand of couscous that I decided to try, Mediterranean Couscous with Special Tomato Sauce by Avvio. It caught by attention because it said it contained a spicy tomato sauce and I love just about anything that contains tomatoes.
The couscous came in an 8.75 oz (250g) sachet and the tomato sauce came in a 4.2 oz (120g) sachet. The front of the packaging said that the couscous took 10 minutes to cook. I was a bit disappointed with this, because the couscous I usually prepare takes much less time to prepare than that. After putting this product to the test, it had still not absorbed all the water after 12 minutes. Even after leaving the lid on the pan, the couscous still took a long time to prepare.
There are 4 servings per container of couscous. Here is what the nutrition facts state about the couscous:

The plain couscous pack by itself provides a lot of good nutrition. It is low in fat and it does not have any cholesterol. The spicy tomato sauce had no fat or cholesterol, but it did contain 288mg of sodium and the fibre content was not as high as I would expect from a tomato sauce.
It is easy to prepare the couscous. After the desired amount of water per serving has boiled, add the couscous and then wait for it to absorb the water. As I stated at the outset of this article, even after 12 minutes the water was not completely absorbed. The next stage is to add the spicy tomato sauce. The consistency was the same as barbecue sauce. It was a thick brown sauce with a strong smell of vinegar. I mixed the tomato sauce and served the couscous with chick peas. I did not think that the tomato sauce tasted very good with the couscous at all. The taste of vinegar was very overpowering and the chilli pepper was also too much for the sauce. Unfortunately, this is not a product that I would choose to buy again.
