In the last few years I have gone through two cold chisels. The first cold chisel was destroyed from old age. The tip mushroomed out and was ground off too many times. It was used to death. The next chisel I bought was a cheap one I bought at the local home improvement center. The tip split off and nearly hurt one of my workers. I was not amused. So I decided to buy the best cold chisel money could buy. That was when I seen the FatMax® Concrete Chisel with Bi-Material Hand Guard.
It wasn’t really pricey compared to most cold chisels in the same aisle but it was definitely different. Like all of the FatMax® tools that Stanley makes it’s meant to take a beating. Their construction grade tools have always impressed me from the get go, so I decided that the FatMax® Concrete Chisel with Bi-Material Hand Guard was the right tool for me.
I took the FatMax® Concrete Chisel with Bi-Material Hand Guard back to the job where we were chiseling out a few cut outs in the concrete slab of a room addition we built. A few of them were in a tight spot and we needed a good cold chisel to take out the edge of the hole against the wall where the last cold chisel failed. I handed the new FatMax® Concrete Chisel with Bi-Material Hand Guard to my lead carpenter. After a few seconds of studying it he laughed and said” Good thing this has a guard, the other guy hit his hand”!
I watched the laborer use the new FatMax® Concrete Chisel with Bi-Material Hand Guard. He wasn’t sure if it would allow him to use it precisely with the guard, but I assured him he could easily use it with the guard and it might protect his hand if he hit it. He laughed and said that’s what the lead carpenter just did.
I found that the laborer made quick work of each hole with the bull pointed tip. It wasn’t like other flat ended concrete cold chisels; this one has a sharp point that makes for quick work when chipping through concrete. The pointed tip also works great for getting into those tight spots and blasting away the concrete.
The handle seems to have a very ergonomic design. It’s shaped sort of like a screwdriver handle, so it fits easily in your hand. The last cold chisel had a square shape that made grasping for long periods of time uncomfortable. The FatMax® Concrete Chisel with Bi-Material Hand Guard has a soft handle that made it easy to hold while it took the shock from the hammer.
At 12″ in length, I found the FatMax® Concrete Chisel with Bi-Material Hand Guard to be a tool that our crew can’t live without. If you’re planning on chipping out some concrete, I would highly recommend buying the FatMax® Concrete Chisel with Bi-Material Hand Guard. It is hands down the best cold chisel I have ever owned and I plan on keeping it around for a long time.
