The Safe-T-Seat by iBert has proven to be one of the best investments I’ve made in a long time. When my husband and I purchased bicycles as a way to get more exercise as a family, we knew we wanted to be able to take our 1 year old son along for the ride. I started researching our options. Rear mounted seats seemed to be less than safe. Children riding in a rear mounted seat also have trouble seeing what’s going on during a bicycle ride. Pull behind trailers seemed to be bulky, hot and uncomfortable for the baby, and difficult to maneuver on sidewalks. So I was perplexed about what to do; then I discovered the Safe-T-Seat by iBert.
In doing research for a way to safely bring our son along for our bicycle rides I discovered that front mounted bike seats, those that attach to the handlebar area and sit between the seat on the handlebars on a bicycle, existed. Most of the reviews I read, however, suggested that a taller person would have difficulty riding with a front mounted bike seat because of their knees hitting the seat. With a husband who is 6 feet tall and long legged I knew that wouldn’t work well for us.
As I continued researching I found the answer: The Safe-T-Seat by iBert. The Safe-T-Seat is a front mounted set, but its design is quite different from the other front mounted bicycle seats available. The iBert Safe-T-Seat sits up at an angle so even the longest legs rarely hit it. If my husband’s knee happens to brush against the seat (which is rare) it simply glides along the smooth bottom with ease. The Safe-T-Seat required little assembly and was attached to our bicycle in about five minutes, requiring only a small area of the handlebars to attach to. Maneuvering the bicycle is surprisingly easy with our 1 year old in the Safe-T-Seat, though you do have to be careful when stopping that you do not let the extra weight cause the bike to tip over. The iBert Safe-T-Seat simply feels more secure as your arms are literally wrapped around your baby during the ride.
Not only is the iBert Safe-T-Seat completely functional for the parents, it is also wonderful for the kids riding in it. Our one year old absolutely loves it. It’s comfortable for him to ride in and he can see everything that’s happening as he whizzes around on daddy’s bike. Since our son hates wearing hats we were worried about him wearing a helmet. After just one bike ride, he was hooked though and we never have to struggle to get him to wear his helmet. The iBert Safe-T-Seat is also a conversation starter as neighborhood onlookers constantly comment on what a cute and wonderful idea the fronted mounted bicycle seat is.
The one drawback to the iBert Safe-T-Seat is that it is pricey: about $105 including shipping, plus the price of a toddler helmet (around $10). If you wish to use the seat on multiple bicycles you will also want to purchase extra attachments. But for the enjoyment, family fitness, and perfect design of the iBert Safe-T-Seat, the price was well worth it for our family.
