If you tend to get canker sores frequently, than you might want to check out Blistex Kanka for the ‘treatment’ of annoying canker sores. This solution is meant to create a ‘shield’ to protect the sore while it heals. I decided to test its claims and find out how effective it is. Here’s a look at how well this product has worked.
How to use it
Blistex Kanka is an oral anesthetic and comes in a small bottle for about $5. This .33 fluid ounce mouth pain liquid is to be applied directly and undiluted to the canker sore. There is a wand applicator that drops the medication onto the ‘wound’ or you can place it on.
How it works and how well
If you are familiar with the ‘numb’ feeling you have when you go to the dentist for a filling, you can relate to what this feels like. Although the numb is not nearly as potent as a dentist anesthetic it still works to rid you of the nagging mouth pain of a canker sore.
Before you apply you need to ‘dry’ the area as best you can and then place the medication on it directly from the bottle; for this reason it is not recommended that you share bottles with others. The immediate feeling is of more pain than the canker sore lets out on its own, but then after a few seconds the pain turns to numbness. The feeling of complete numbness goes away within a few minutes and then you can function normally without fear of drooling and only the canker sore pain goes away.
I applied it to a large canker sore I had for a few days consecutively (keeping within the recommended doses per day) and within 3 days it was no longer a problem and was healing. Normally my canker sores take 1 to 2 weeks to go away on their own even when rinsing with recommended home remedies. I found Blistex Kanka to be very effective for treatment of canker sores, and it allows you to do normal activities (like eating) without pain.
Even though this product worked really well, it does have a few cons. One of these cons is the smell and taste, which isn’t pleasant. The taste isn’t horrible, just not candy-flavored like your dentist’s, and the smell lingers for a little while around you. Although I didn’t have a canker sore on the inside of my cheek (it was easily accessible on the inside of my lip), I would assume it would be very difficult to get the medication over to that area without dropping or accidentally touching your tongue and turning it numb as well. But what isn’t speculation is that the ‘barrier’ that leaves over the sore can rub off on your teeth and not look good. Make sure to let it dry a few seconds to avoid spreading it on other parts of your mouth.
Overall, I find Blistex Kanka a good buy for those that have occasional canker sores that become very problematic to everyday activities. The price is decent compared to some other numbing medications that run 2 or 3 dollars more for less product. Blistex Kanka has a lot of uses per bottle and stores for about two years.
