In the summer most people go in search of products that will help to keep them cool and refreshed. Nothing suits that purpose better than the Rival Snow Cone Maker. This wonderfully sophisticated ice crushing machine works beautifully, making snow cones, ice shushes, and fruity drinks in just a matter of minutes. And it isn’t expensive at around $19.99.
The Rival Snow Cone Maker comes in white and a variety of accenting summer colors including lime green, bright orange, sunshine yellow, and turquoise. There is something to suit just about anyone’s aesthetic tastes. It comes with the ice shaving component, the sturdy stand and base, and two cylindrical ice molds.
You can use ice cubes straight from your refrigerator or use the ice molds provided. Both work equally well, delivering perfectly shaved ice each and every time.
It is easy to operate with a simple push top that you hold down with the palm of your hand until the ice is completely shaved. Although, the machine is certainly easy enough for children to use, it isn’t recommended. It is, after all, an electrical appliance with sharp cutting blades that could be dangerous if improperly used.
There is a small dial on the front of the snow cone maker to set the thickness of the ice desired. It can be set on fine for snow cones through thick for those who prefer slushes. It works very quickly, taking only a few seconds, which makes it perfect for use even for a large group or party.
The machine cleans easily with just warm soap and water. However, as is the case with any electrical appliance, you cannot immerse the motor portion into water. I just wipe mine clean with some of Clorox’s new antibacterial product that is approved for eating surfaces. That helps to keep the machine free of bacteria, clean, and ready to go at anytime.
Of course, the snow cone maker is perfect for any children’s event as well as for neighborhood parities and for those outdoor BBQs. However, it is also just plain fun for anytime at all. It can entice the whole family to drink much healthier, particularly since Rival makes a number of delicious sugar free snow cone syrups.
Although I use mine primarily for snow cones, my daughter loves to make smoothies and frozen fruit drinks with hers. She freezes her favorite fruit juice in the ice molds provided in the machine. Once they are ready, she pops them in the machine for an icy fruit treat.
Rival even provides several recipes with its snow cone maker; both in “virgin” and “alcoholic” blends. These include:
Peaches & Cream
They also make a wide variety of pre-made syrups including:
Plain and Sour Apple
Plain, Sour, and Sugar Free Blueberry
Plain, Sour, and Sugar Free Cherry
Grape and Sour Grape
Hawaiian Blue Ice
Watermelon and Sour Watermelon
You can, of course, make your own syrups at home. There are a number of recipes available on the Internet.
We use dessert dishes for our snow cones and eat them with a regular spoon. However, if you are using the machine for a party or event, you might want to invest in some of Rival’s other products like snow cone cups and holders or special snow cone straws.
In comparison to using a blender or other ice crushers on the market, the Rival Snow Cone Maker is heads and shoulders above the rest. Most blenders are incapable of finely shaving ice for snow cones. Most ice crushers tend to be inconsistent in how they shave ice; often leaving large, inedible chunks.
The snow cone maker is fairly small – – standing only about 10″ in height. It tucks easily inside almost any cabinet with ease. I leave mine out on the counter. It doesn’t take up much space and isn’t totally unattractive either.
While certainly no one “needs” a snow cone maker, it is a handy, dandy little machine to have around in the summer. I really couldn’t, and wouldn’t want to, do without mine. It gets five stars all the way!
The Rival Snow Cone Maker is available at most discount department stores like Wal-Mart, K-Mart, and Target at a cost of about $19.99. Pre-made syrups come in 20 fl. oz. bottles at a cost between $1.84 and $2.99, depending upon the brand involved and the purchase site. Paper snow cone cups and straws are generally packaged together in sets of 10 to 12 at a cost between $3.99 and $5.99. Snow cone cup holders come in sets of four at a cost of about $5.99.
