When I attended college in River Falls, Wisconsin, there were very few restaurants to choose from; especially when it came to pizza. That’s why, when I was re-visiting my alma mater, I came across something a bit different; American Pie Pizza.
One thing I’ve discovered about smaller pizza parlors is the food there is either hit or miss and I’ll be the first to tell you I was taking a bit of a gamble dining there when there was a Pizza Hut four blocks away on Main Street. However, I found the gamble paid off this time.
When I first looked at the menu, I originally thought I was making a mistake. The prices at American Pie Pizza are a bit higher than some of its larger competitors. Several of their salads they offered ran from $8.99 to $9.49 for example and the 14-inch “American Pie” pizza we ordered (bacon, ground beef, mozzarella & Cheddar Cheese) cost us about $17.
However, I will say, even though they were more expensive, they did provide quite a bit of food. The pizza was loaded with toppings that were much fresher than a lot of their competitors would have provided. In fact, if I compare it to the other pizza places I’ve eaten at, I would probably rank it among the top five or six in terms of flavor.
The pizza was also very filling. My wife and I were only able to get through half of it and had to take the rest back to our motel for later.
The service at American Pie Pizza wasn’t too bad but, while I can say I’ve had worse, I can also say I’ve had much better. They were friendly but their friendliness felt a little bit forced too; almost like they were putting on an act.
I did enjoy the atmosphere though. The restaurant was well designed and, unlike many similar restaurants, the servers and guests were able to move between tables without interrupting another person’s meal. There was just enough space between the tables for us to feel like we had our privacy even though there was a decent sized crowd there.
And, even though we didn’t order anything other than the pizza, I did like the restaurant’s selection. Along with the pizza and traditional Italian dishes like Chicken Alfredo we also had a choice of traditional bar & grill type foods like cheeseburgers and various sandwiches.
If you’re someone who is looking to dine on a budget, American Pie Pizza probably isn’t right for you. But, if you’re looking for good food and are willing to pay a bit more, it’s a place you should check out if you’re ever in River Falls. In fact, if they were there when I was in college, I might have enjoyed the experience more.
