In its first weekend of release, Sandra Bullock’s new movie The Proposal stormed the country and did exceptionally well at the box office, surpassing all expectations. Ms. Bullock, after all, is no longer the superstar she was in the 1990s when she could open a movie all by herself. Some Hollywood observers were secretly wondering if this was the last chance for Sandra Bullock. She needed a hit for sure and she got it.
It certainly helped that Sandra Bullock paired herself with rising super-hunk Ryan Reynolds who appeared in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” earlier this year and who helped turn that movie into a monstrous blockbuster. After the Wolverine character, Ryan Reynolds’ character Deadpool was the most popular “X-Men” in the movie. The fact that Reynolds the actor is in such spectacular physical shape sure doesn’t hurt his appeal to women.
Reynolds’ acting career is certainly headed straight upward. USAToday.com has suggested that Reynolds will not keep his low profile much longer, especially since he’s married to super-sexy actress Scarlett Johansson who keeps making films left and right. It also has been rumored that he will get his own X-Men movie project titled “Deadpool” which will continue the adventures of Reynolds’ Deadpool character.
Romance Comedy Shortage
It also helped Ms. Bullock that there was a vast shortage of romantic comedies in 2009. There were plenty of action movies like “Star Trek,” “Fast and Furious,” “Terminator: Salvation,” “Watchmen” and “Wolverine.” These movies were all about guys and were marketed to guys. Good luck finding another romantic comedy in the first half of 2009, so yes this was a big untapped audience.
But give Sandra Bullock credit for the success of the movie “The Proposal.” She is still adorably cute and fun to watch. She still puts herself in awkward situations for the benefit of comedy, for the plot, for the fun of the audience. And she is still smokin’ hot. Any journalist could easily write about Sandra Bullock until the cows come home.
The Arizona Republic has reported that Sandra Bullock will star in another romantic comedy later this year, titled “All About Steve.” Ironically her main co-star in this movie is Bradley Cooper who is currently anchoring the film “The Hangover” which is competing for viewers in theaters with “The Proposal.”
Everyone loves Sandra Bullock. Women love her because Bullock is pretty but not unbelievably attractive. Guys like here because she’s one hot, sexy female. Put Ms. Bullock into a movie with “X-Men” star Ryan Reynolds and everyone comes out a winner.
