Blowing glass may seem like it’s skilled work that can only be done be a professional, but that’s not really true. Blowing your own glass isn’t really that hard at all. It may look hard at first but once you get the hang of it, it can be a very satisfying hobby. Glass blowing is the art of creating pieces of glass artwork by manipulating molten glass. You can create beautiful pieces of glass by just shaping and spinning in the heat. Here are some quick steps that are involved in the glass blowing process.
The first step is gathering. Gathering is done by collecting the glass from the furnace by turning it around the pipe. Next is the marver. The marver is a steel table used in the glass blowing process. The glass is now rolled on the marver into a cylinder. Don’t worry if you don’t get all of these steps 100 percent correct the first time. Glass blowing certainly takes a lot of practice to get perfect. The next step is capping. Capping is when you blow into the pipe and then cover the hole to trap all the air inside of the pipe. The heat of the glass will cause the air to expand which will inflate the glass, thus the blowing.
Gather the glass once again around the glass bubble. Continue to repeat these steps until you have enough glass to complete your desired project. The next step is to shape your glass. Using the marver, paddles or wooden blocks, shape the glass into the desired shape. Add a neckline next. A neckline is adding to ease the removal of the glass from the blow pipe. Finally, finish the shape and flatten the bottom of your glass. You will need to transfer the piece of glass into a punti to finish the top. Using a pair of tweezers, drop some water into the neck line and lightly tap the blow pipe. This will disconnect the glass from the pipe. Heat the lip and flare it open. The last step is to knock the glass piece off of the punti and put it into an annealer for cooling. The cooling may take awhile so be patient.
Glass blowing is a great hobby and is getting pretty popular once again. Glass blowing may look hard, but with some practice and patience, it can become very simple to do and will leave you satisfied and happy to have a new skill. Create pieces of art for yourself, or to sell for others. Home made pieces of blown glass can actually be quite pricey if made to look professional and eye-catching. Try glass blowing for yourself and see if you have some extra talents that you never knew that you had. Remember to always be careful when working with glass and heat and always wear gloves throughout the process.
