There are many ways to beat the blues and blahs… following is one idea…
Everyone tends to feel not quite themselves from time to time, it could be an event like an accident or other unplanned event that turns your smile upside down. Sometimes it could be negative gossip or just plain weariness. This is a part of life and can be addressed in a positive way to move on to a better frame of mind. First thing to do is make a list with two columns:
Column one – list what your blessings are
Column two – list what blessings you wish you had no matter how fanciful
Examples for Column one:
Person 1 whom I love
Person 2 whom I love
Person 3 whom I love
Person 1 whom I miss
Person 1 who loves me
Person 2 who loves me
Person 1 who did something nice for me
Person 1 who did something nice for my family
Ability to smile
Ability to cry
Ability to feel
Ability to write
Ability to read
Examples for Column two:
Ability to fly
Play seventeen instruments
Speak nineteen languages
Never be blue again
Two feet taller
Twenty pounds lighter
Better facial features
As your list grows you should be gaining a bit of perspective and column one should be really long. For the list of names of persons you love and or miss and those names of people who love you get some paper and hand write notes to them along the lines of:
How are you doing? I just wanted to write a small note to you to say thank you for loving me and always being a positive person in my life. I appreciate everything you have done for me and my family. Especially when you did ___________________________________________________________. It really made my day and had me smiling for a while. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Your name here :-)
It will make their day and should improve your mood as you remember the precious moments you have experienced in your life. Go ahead and write a note to yourself explaining why you love yourself and why you enjoy your own company, it’s allowed! There are no fast and set rules and this is just a template that you can use as a starting point. As ideas flow into your mind use them… If you can’t write that in your current mood write a note to yourself describing something that makes you smile. I like to send notes to myself that have pictures of balloons in them; bright, shiny red balloons are my favorite and always lifts my spirit. Think about something you like ice cream, hamburgers, oak trees, roses, whatever and send yourself a note with pictures or descriptions of your favorite things.
Get off the couch and get out of the house. I mean just stand on your porch and stretch now look at the skyline, stretch again, take a deep breath and go back into the house. That’s it! That’s my suggestion…If you want to go a bit further visit your local drugstore and buy note cards and write an anonymous note inside like, “Have a splendid day!” Drop the cards off to the local nursing home and the staff will distribute to residents. Oh, you want to go walking or jogging…well then go right ahead! Have a great time!
If you are not feeling better after making your columns, writing notes to loved ones, writing and mailing notes to yourself and shopping for cards for your communities seniors proceed to the next step…
Once you drop your notes into the mailbox take a nap. Your blues may stem from simply not sleeping well lately. First turn off the house phone, and the cell phone, put in some ear plugs (bits of tissue will work) and lay down. Close your eyes and say your time tables to yourself; 1×1 =1, 1×2=2, 1×3=3, 1×4=4….
If the times table isn’t working try to think of a poem to recite over and over to yourself like, “I’m a little teapot short and stout, here is my handle, here is my spout….” Try not to think of things that are not associated with a strong feeling for you like counting sheep or goats.
After you note you should if not be feeling much better you should be well on your way… so have a marvelously, splendid day!
