The hit CW network program, Smallville, returned to action this past Thursday night with the exciting premiere of Season Seven. As faithful viewers of the program knows we left our hero, future Superman Clark Kent, as he faced off against another Phantom Zone criminal. Last season he fought, and captured, several escaped Phantom Zone criminals, including the WWE’s Batista, Kane, and rap star Bow Wow. The Phantom Zone, as comic purists will know, was a way Kryptonians imprisoned their criminals. Clark Kent, the last survivor of the planet Krypton, was sent by his father, Jor-El, to safety on Earth as their home planet was destroyed. Jor-El had discovered the Phantom Zone and the planet began using it as a way of imprisoning their criminals, indefinately, at no cost to their government. When Clark was himself imprisoned in the Phantom Zone at the end of Season 5, a former assistant of his father’s helped him to escape, but several criminals also escaped.
Most of Season 6 was taken up with episodes in which Clark encountered these criminals and either defeated them or sent them back into the Phantom Zone. The final criminal he was to encounter would be a creation by Kryptonian scientists that was discarded. This creation needed the DNA of a Kryptonian to survive, in the meantime it merely fed on human beings while searching for a host. Clark finally had a show down with this criminal in the secret lab of Lex Luthor, series evil genius and comic book master criminal, situated in the Smallville, Kansas location known as Reeves’ Dam, a salute to the late Christopher Reeve who played Superman and Clark Kent in the four movie series in the 1970s and 1980s. There the two faced off and the Zone criminal finally had his hands on some Kryptonian DNA.
As Season 7 starts off the two super beings are locked in battle, however all our supporting characters are locked in their own struggle of survival. Chloe Sullivan, Clark’s school years friend and keeper of his super-secret, had rushed to the aid of her cousin, Lois Lane, who was trapped in the secret lab, looking for answers and perhaps the newstory that would catapult her career in journalism. Chloe found Lois dying from the wound she received by one of Luthor’s armed guards. Chloe, using a before unknown Meteor Power (viewers will know that some of Smallville’s residents have displayed certain, unique powers of their own, caused by Kryptonite meteor rocks which fell to Earth after the destruction of planet Krypton), saved the life of her cousin, but it looked like she was to die in the process. Lex Luthor’s father, Lionel Luthor, had come to the rescue, trying to prevent Clark from danger with the use of a Kryptonite meteor rock, which had the opposite affect on the Bizarro Phantom Zoner, giving him greater strength and power. Lionel had been knocked out and left for dead during the battle between Clark and Bizarro. Lex himself was being arrested on the bridge by Reeves Dam as he tried to escape the battle inside, on charges of killing his wife, Lana Lang, whom it appeared died in a car bomb explosion. She had been tricked into marrying Lex by his efforts to make her appear pregnant and had confronted him about this, explaining she was leaving.
During the show we learned that Chloe, after being declared dead by Smallville Medical Center staff, who see a lot of the same people in these stories over and over (hope they have good medical coverage), is alive and well. Clark saves her from the morgue, asking questions about her survival, although she parries these questions. Lois looks into the experiments of Lex Luthor while the man himself sits in jail on the charges of killing his wife. Lionel Luthor is saved in the river coming from Reeves Dam by a mysterious figure, as yet unexplained. The Martian Manhunter, a figure from the comic book world of Superman and his friends, explains to Clark that he must defeat the evil Bizarro and Clark figures out that although Kryptonite will enpower the criminal the yellow sun, which gives Clark his powers, will become draining for Bizarro. All the while a mysterious female, Kara (Clark’s cousin from the planet Krypton, who was played in the 1980s movie Supergirl by Helen Slater), is freed from her imprionment by the collapse of the Dam. She initially saves Lex from drowning and then disappears, only to reappear at the end of the episode to usher in a new era for the series.
Clark finally defeats the evil Bizarro, but not before he cops a feel of Lois’ backside at the Luthor mansion, sending him into space to be dealt with by the Martian Manhunter. Chloe is alive, Lois is alive, Clark is alive, Lex is alive, and Lionel is alive. All the key players whose fate was left hanging at the end of Season 6 got their reprieve in this episode. The only character whose fate was sealed, it seemed, was Lana’s. She died in the Season Finale at the end of last year, but as the episode closed up we are wisked away to Shanghai and we get a glimpse of a woman walking through town and as we’re taken inside her apartment there we find out is a blonde-wigged Lana Lang. She did survive and is living on the run in a foreign country, thousands of miles from her evil husband. This will probably come back into play later this season, for now we know she’s alive and Clark and gang will have to move on without her. Catch the next episode this coming Thursday on the CW network at 7 pm Central Time, check your local listings for actual times and channels.
