In the latter part of the 1990s, MSN started a gaming site known as, “The Zone.” The site offered many games which you could play online for free. The Zone launched one of its most played games, known as, “Fighter Ace.” Fighter Ace was a massive online WWII flight simulator. The game featured many World War 2 era fighter planes to choose from. The different teams consisted of various nations. The nations a player could choose from were the United States, Great Britain, Japan, and Germany.
The goal of the game was basically to stay alive while involved in dogfights with many other players. The game involved the use of talk software known as, “Roger Wilco.” This software allowed players to communicate with team mates during game play via a headset. The Zone offered a free three day trial and once that was up it was then $14.95 a month. It was not long before The Zone came out with an upgrade. While the first version of Fighter Ace was available for play, it was soon mothballed.
Some games just never go out of style and they certainly never die. Fighter Ace was renamed as, “Air Attack” and licensed to Ketsujin Studios. The game has been released as a membership based, free to play funfest. I just happened upon it a few days ago and found that I actually missed that old game. The graphics are not the greatest by today’s standards, but it is good enough to enjoy. The game play is pretty basic, and is similar to most flight simulators of its day.
There are some things that you must be made aware of should you decide to play this game. You must register at their website to download the game. Registration is completely free and so is playing the game. Once you have downloaded the game you simply go through the installation process, which is very straight forward. Here is a tip which you will need, do not play the game by starting its launcher. You must go the website, login and then hit the launch button from there. The game will load up and you are ready to go.
One of the up sides to this game is that if your plane is shot to the ground, you do not have to wait any amount of time to get back into the fight. This game does not involve round play, which is a down side of many games, such as, “Ghost Recon.” Air Attack is one of those timeless games where all you have to do is shoot and not be shot, which appeals to the most basic interest of gamers.
I remember my friends and I spent hours at a time playing this game. It is likely that I will rediscover that great fun I had before. Remember, if you want to have a great time playing a great game, then go ahead, sign up, download, and play. I will see you there.
