I have been a Sonicare user for approximately one year. I liked the Sonicare Elite very much and was impressed with how much cleaner my teeth felt after using the product. So when Sonicare launched their Sonicare UV Sanitizer, I could not wait to try the product since it would sanitize my Sonicare toothbrush head.
Upon opening the package, my husband noted that the most difficult thing about set up was, in fact, the packaging. Don’t let this put you off though. If you have scissors handy, you should have no problem wresting the product from its plastic packaging. The only thing after that that we needed to do was plug it in. The unit must be plugged in for use. It does not run on batteries or hold a charge like a Sonicare toothbrush. If you have your Sonicare toothbrush base plugged in at all times, you are going to run short of plugs. However, your Sonicare toothbrush can hold a charge over many days, so there is really no need to leave your recharging unit continuously plugged in to your outlet.
How does the product work? Simply plug it in, put your Sonicare toothbrush inside, shut the door, and hit a button. Your Sonicare toothbrush head will fit side-ways into the unit giving you a profile view of your brush head. The metal on the bottom of your toothbrush head base will help align the toothbrush since the bottom of the UV Sanitizer is magnetized. Once you hit the button, it will run for a 10 minute cycle, killing the germs lurking on your toothbrush. The unit runs whisper quiet, I could not hear it at all. The only way I knew it was running was because the light was on to indicate that it was in use. Does your spouse use a Sonicare toothbrush as well? The Sonicare UV Sanitizer will sanitize two brush heads at the same time.
The Sonicare UV Sanitizer unit also comes with an adapter unit so that those who use an Oral B electric toothbrush can also use the Sonicare UV Sanitizer. Simply snap the adapter unit into the center of the sanitizer and swing the adapter to either side of the unit. This will allow Oral B users to enjoy a sanitized toothbrush also. However, it is important to note that other toothbrushes should not be used in the sanitizer because doing so could cause a fire.
Why should you get one? Let’s face it, the bathroom isn’t exactly the most sanitary room in your house. Not only are there germs in your mouth, but there germs floating in the air every time you flush your toilet. Mythbusters actually did a show on this very thing and found that anything close to the toilet became germ laden after flushing waste matter down the toilet. If you can’t store your toothbrush in another room or don’t want to, you need a unit like this just to keep your brush sanitary based on that alone! The unit is also a very convenient place to store your toothbrush in between brushings.
How much does the Sonicare UV Sanitizer cost? These units retail at most stores that carry the product from about $45-$50. Amazon does carry this product, as do many well known drug store chains. The Sonicare Flexcare does come with the UV Sanitizer attached. It retails for approximately $179.
Is it worth the cost? I would have to say yes. In my opinion, it is a product that you should buy. Electric toothbrushes do get your teeth cleaner and are often dentist recommended, so why not buy this as an accessory? Dental health is important, but many people do not take the time to properly clean their toothbrush or change them in between colds and other illnesses. I should note that I had a cold right after I got this unit and sanitized my toothbrush each time I brushed. My husband’s toothbrush head often rests near mine, and this time, he did not catch my cold from me. With so many super bugs floating around, I feel comfortable doing my part in killing any germs lurking on my toothbrush head before I put it in my mouth again.
