The often-rumored cheaper Playstation 3 is now real. In a press release from Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, the 40GB Playstation 3 will retail for the MSRP of $399.99 and launch on October 10th in Europe. Although it hasn’t been announce for other territories, the 40GB Playstation 3 should launch in time for the holiday rush at around the same price point. The 40GB Playstation 3 will only have two USB ports (as oppose to four from the other SKUs) and has no backward compatibility with Playstation 2 games whatsoever. Since emulation for Playstation 1 games are done in all software, original Playstation 1 games are compatible with all the Playstation 3 SKUs.
This is the second time in four months that a new SKU for the Playstation 3 was revealed. In July, the 60GB Playstation 3 received a $100 price drop while the 80GB Playstation 3 with the Playstation 3 game Motorstorm bundled in was announced for the MSRP of $599.99.
The 40GB Playstation 3 marks the fourth SKU of the Playstation 3. The 20GB, 60GB and 80GB Playstation 3s came before the new SKU. Production for the 20GB and 60GB Playstation 3s, both of which were the original launch SKUs, ended. Besides the size of the hard drive, each SKU offers different features.
The 20GB has no chrome finish, Wi-Fi and memory card reader. It does have the Playstation 2’s Emotion Engine chip, which makes the Playstation 3 more compatible with Playstation 2 games. The original MSRP for the 20GB Playstation 3 is $499.99. The production of the SKU has ended.
The 60GB has it all: chrome finish, Wi-Fi and memory card reader and Playstation 2’s Emotion Engine. The original MSRP for the 60GB Playstation 3 is $599.99. The 60GB was also bundled with the Blu Ray release of Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby for a limited time. It received a price drop to $499.99 in July. The production of the SKU has also ended but many units are still availble to buy off store shelves.
The 80GB Playstation 3 has the chrome finish, Wi-Fi and memory card reader but it’s missing the Playstation 2’s Emotion Engine chip; as a result, the 80GB Playstation 3 only has limited compatibility with Playstation 2 games. The original MSRP for the 80GB Playstation 3 with the Playstation 3 game, Motorstorm, included is $599.99
The 40GB Playstation 3, as mention before, only has two USB ports and won’t be compatible with Playstation 2 games. In addition, the new SKU won’t have a memory card reader. The 40GB Playstation 3 will retail for the MSRP of $399.99 (for Europe).
