Women appreciate gifts and presents and smile graciously when they receive them. As they unwrap their gifts they look up at you with those beautiful big eyes and get excited at the present. However, buying gifts too early in a relationship sends the wrong message. You don’t want to be “Mr. Money Bags” or the gullible guy who has his affections smashed to the ground.
The ancient method of gift giving has been practiced in the United States for many thousands of years by the Native Americans. Gift giving was part of the politics of the time and shows that you care for the other people and that you wish to have a good relationship with them. During these times food, weapons and horses were seen as prized items because they help ensure the groups survival.
In today’s world gift giving is seen not as a commodity for survival but as a token of a person’s affections. How much you spend, what you buy and how you give a gift all shows your intentions and exposes your interest to the other person. There is a clear difference between buying your niece a gift certificate to McDonalds and buying her sexy lingerie. The meaning is in the gift and how you give it.
Consider the price of the gift. Showing up with a single piece of chocolate is likely to appear cheap and pathetic. Your date will soon realize that you don’t want to spend any money, you will penny pinch your relationship and you don’t value them. However, purchasing them a Blackberry cell phone with a separate line on your account tells them that you want to purchase their affection. This may turn them off just like they turn off their new phone. Find something in the middle of these two extremes.
Consider the nature of the gift. Certain gifts have messages embedded within them. For example, sending your enemy a herring tells them that you are going to defeat them. Likewise sending a person you have only dated a few times a plane ticket to go with you to a resort is way too forward. It gives the message that you desire to make love to them. Your relationship has now turned to a cheap love affair.
Consider how you give the gift. Giving a gift in public at a person’s birthday party is very different then giving a gift while at a romantic restaurant. Assuming that you desire to show the other person affection you might not want to wrap up a box of golf balls in pretty paper and act secret about it. Such romantic gifts should be reasonably priced, small in nature and have meaning. For example, giving a young lady a gift certificate for her pleasure at a spa is completely appropriate (Assuming that you are not trying to go with her).
