If you take a look around, you’ll probably notice a change in trends. Fashion trends change all the time, but lately, it’s been hair styles that have taken a turn. For years, both women and girls have spent many hours and dollars burning their hair to make it pin straight. Nowadays, curly haired men and women are showing off their curls more and more. Those who used to spend hours on their hair to get it straight are now spending minutes to keep it curly.
Those with straight hair, on the other hand, have always spent just minutes on their hair. Often, you wash your hair, a quick comb or brush through leaves it perfect and pin straight even when dry without a natural curl in sight. Yet, the tables have turned and you envy those natural curls. Not to worry, you too can have soft curls without a perm. Follow these simple steps for beautiful volume and bouncy curls:
What to avoid. Before you begin anything, do not try this! I often see girls walking through the mall and along the streets with messy crunchy, sort of wet looking hair. DO NOT load your hair with gel or hair spray and try to scrunch it into curls. If your hair is not curly, it will just look BAD.
What you’ll needHere is where you’ll need to spend some money, but not a lot. First, you’ll need curlers. You can get the plastic ones, but I recommend the soft, clothe-covered foam ones. Next, you will need some gel and hairspray. For straight hair, I recommend something strong. Look for products that say “strong hold”. Don’t try curling gels and sprays because they are designed to enhance existing curls and aren’t strong enough for what you need. All of these can be found in most drugstores and probably won’t cost you more than fifteen dollars. Also, it’s a one-time cost and will last you several curling sessions.
Wash your hair at nightYou will need to start in the evening for your perfect curls in order to get them to last. Wash your hair as you normally would with shampoo and conditioner. Lightly towel dry it, them brush or comb it through.
Separate for curlsNext, section your hair into 3 to 6 equal sections, depending on how thick your hair is. Take one section and clip the rest to the side. Divide the section into one inch sections. For smaller, tighter curls, use less hair for bigger, looser curls, use slightly more hair.
Hold that curlWhile holding the small piece of hair with one hand, use the other to get about half a pea sized amount of gel. This will be good for shoulder length hair. Use more for longer hair. Rub it between your fingers first to ensure even distribution. Smooth the gel on the hair starting about 2 to 3 inches from the scalp. Make sure your hair doesn’t feel really sticky or hard.
Twist it upTake one curler and place the tip of the hair towards one side of the curler. Start rolling it under and up the hair. Don’t roll it too tightly. Gradually gather the hair across the curler as you roll until you reach the top of your hair. Fold down the ends of the curler, or secure it according to the directions of the curlers you use. Continue doing this until all your hair is in curlers.
Time to setNow you can finish your evening and go to sleep. It’s best to use the soft curlers so that it doesn’t hurt your head.
FinishWhen you wake up, wait until you are completely finished getting ready to do your hair. If your hair is still wet, you might want to use a warm hair dryer for a couple of minutes while the curlers are still in. Don’t use it on high because you will end up blow your hair into a frizz. Next, spray some hairspray onto your hair, while still in the curlers. Remove the curlers one at a time being careful not to pull out the curls. As you long as you didn’t roll them too tight, they should just fall out once you undo the curler and let them drop. Don’t touch the curls until you have finished removing all the curlers.
Fix it up until perfectTurn your head upside down and shake it gently. Flip your head back and gently shake again. Now, if any of the hair is pointing a weird way, move it as necessary. If the curls look too tight, gently tug in them until you have the desired curliness. Finish it off with some more hairspray.
Hopefully they will last you the whole day. Enjoy!
