I like things that are free. Well, most things that are free. I can do without the guy offering free kittens from a box outside the local flea market. Anything that’s free to acquire but costs money later is not my idea of free. But free online games? I’m all over that. Unfortunately with most free online games, you get what you pay for. However, here are a few addicting exceptions – online games that are free, fun and positively addictive.
The bottom line for this list was that the game had to be free (I’m cheap), easy to learn (I don’t have a lot of time) and fun.
1. Swords and Sandals 2
The basic premise behind Swords and Sandals 2 is that you are a gladiator. You fight, gain experience, purchase new weapons and armor and then fight some more. Sounds pretty basic and this flash-based game is just that. However, Swords and Sandals 2 is one of those rare games in which the sum is more than its parts. What drew me the most to Swords and Sandals 2 is its minuscule learning curve. It takes all of five minutes to learn how to play Swords and Sandals 2, but the different strategies you can employ are virtually endless, and therein lies the fun.

2. Line Rider
Amazingly simple, yet additively fun, Line Rider has developed a huge fan base since it first came out in September, 2006. Line Rider’s premise is even simpler than Swords and Sandals 2. In Line Rider, you draw lines for a little guy to ride his sled on. More of a toy than a game (technically you can’t win Line Rider), Line Rider might seem simple, but the permutations are endless. You Tube and Google Video feature hundreds of intricate tracks like this ONE, that demonstrate just how complex you can make this seemingly simple game.

3. More Bloons
I’m not sure if this game is irritating or addictive, but once I started playing it, I had to force myself away. The goal in this game is to pop balloons by throwing darts. Simple enough. The trick is that you only have a few darts, but there are lots and lots of balloons. Try the unlimited darts option until you get the hang of it.

4. Whack Your Boss
If your boss has ever made you so mad that you have wanted to pummel him or her into oblivion, this is the game for you. The point of the game is to find all 17 office objects you can use to beat your boss into a bloody pulp. Not a game as much as an interactive flash animation, Whack Your Boss is still a fun way to release all those pent up workplace frustrations. Be forewarned though, if you don’t like gore, this is not the game for you.

So there you have it. From the ancient coliseum of Swords and Sandals 2, to the office cubicle of Whack Your Boss, here are four addictive online games. And of course, as with most addictive things, the first one is free.
