Although Tetris is probably the best known game worldwide and the grand champion of addictive games with its quick pick up and play style it is not very easy to copy. The games style and ease is one of its endearing qualities and makes it so fun. You don’t have to know much about video games and Tetris is one that any age can play with ease, all it takes is a quick mind and even quicker fingers.
XBox and Tetris Online Inc. are trying to recapture the glory of Tetris back in the Gameboy days and add it to the next generation of XBox fans using a new and unique style and appearance but it is mostly the same game with a screen saver. Tetris splash has almost the exact same gameplay as the original or Tetris 2 with some fishy background while playing and a neat screen saver, aquarium style.
The single player has two options and multiplayer has a few more options but it boils down to common Tetris gameplay with very little change over the past several Tetris games. You have one addition that is unique in a ghost piece that is an outline of the piece that shows where that piece will end up if you do not move it left or right, or turn it. This is simply a helper addition and not much of one as it takes time to get used to the help and can be more of a distraction.
The gameplay other than the ghost piece is basic with two modes in the marathon and 40 lines timed for single player. The Marathon is to see how many lines you can clear with no time limit, just blocks falling and you putting them in their place. The 40 line is simply how fast you can clear 40 lines and both games you can use or not use the hold field that previews the upcoming pieces.
Tetris Splash also has a couple of multiplayer variations in the four player on the same screen in a match to see who survives falling blocks the longest. The online multiplayer over XBox live is a six man event where you vie for bragging rights in six player team and free for all games.
The screen saver is your typical fish tank screen saver that comes with Tetris Splash with a couple of settings and even more downloadable fish from XBox Live at a price. Overall the game is pretty basic and a bit of a disappointment for one who has a dedicated Tetris Gameboy in his bathroom. The screen saver is kind of neat with a good variety of fish available and even salt and fresh water varieties to choose from.
