The power to change the world is not as hard as it may seem, and is one California teenager found out back in 2004. She had an idea, that has went nationwide and to think it started with just one teenager. Shauna Fleming, looked beyond the usual teen issues and helped create a nationwide letter writing campaign to think of our troops, and everyone gathered together to support her idea, which showed massive support for our troops overseas. She not only made her parents extremely proud she has made the nation proud and in many ways has changed the way society looks at teenagers.
Shauna Fleming was just a freshman in high school when this remarkable idea came to her following the events of 9/11. She noticed in the following months that some people seem to forget just what our soldiers were doing for our nation, and our safety. Her idea was to write a letters to the soldiers thanking them for what they are doing for us it was, a simple thank you note, for such a great present, our freedom as a nation. Shauna wanted soldiers to know how much their personal sacrifice, meant to her and her loved ones.
Shauna knew that other groups were busy sending care packages, and cookies but the very few of those packages contained a personalize thank you note to our soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq. She saw a need and it became her personal goal to collect one million letters for the soldiers fighting in wars overseas. She knew the value of a personalized thank you note.
At first, this letter writing campaign was only going on in her high school, and it began trickling out to other avenues and the letters were pouring in. Even though the letters were pouring in and she was still finding herself short of her goal of a million personalized thank you notes the national media picked up the story.
When President George W. Bush heard of her efforts, he wanted to meet her and personally thank her for what she was doing for our nation soldiers and the public as well. The president helped her further her goals by bringing even more national attention to her issue.
The response from the American public was overwhelming to this personalized thank you note writing campaign and soon that million thank you goal was reached. She began in this thank you writing campaign in March of 2004 and it only took until November of 2004 to get that one million thank you note, which she presented to President George W. Bush in a private oval office ceremony.
These personalize thank you notes are still being written all over the nation and they are sent overseas to the soldiers who desperately need them as morale boosters as they fight in wars around the world.
I know many of us had heard of the letter writing campaign, and many of us, did not know how this campaign started. I know I of written very few letters to the soldiers overseas, and I never knew where the idea had started. I just went to the web site www.amillionthanks.org and that is where I learned the truth about how this organization was started.
It’s people like Shauna Fleming, who are not afraid to take a stand, and makes this nation a better place for us all. Shauna Fleming is a great example of the American spirit and shows a tremendous amount of patriotism. She is someone we can all look up to, because she is not afraid to stand up for what she believes in.
