If you had the problem I had for most of my life, you are extremely frustrated and are longing for a change. You are an actor living in a city that seemingly doesn’t have very many opportunities for you to reach for. It is very easy to become confused and to just give up whenever you can’t find work. Well, what if I told you that you can find work wherever you live.
As silly as these sounds, it is true. You can be a working actor no matter what city you live in. All you have to do is search within your community for acting opportunities. They may not get you a star on the walk of fame, but they will allow you an outlet to express yourself creatively, which is what every actor craves.
The first step to finding work no matter where you live is to gather all of your resources. If you live in a college town, this will be very easy. There is more than likely a campus newspaper, which will list any and all casting calls for theater productions as well as student film opportunities.
Both of these various productions are a great way for you to network with community actors as well as up-and-coming directors. I have found that I have been very satisfied with working on these types of productions. I have made some of my best friends on the sets of college stage productions, as well as on the film sets of many student productions.
If you are looking for a unique outlet for expressing yourself creatively, and being involved in the creative process, than you will find this within these productions. However, there are several different areas in which you can find work. If you live in a semi-large city, you will more than likely be able to find promotional work.
This isn’t the best way to express yourself, however, it is a great opportunity to make some extra cash while you’re in-between shows. I have done several promotional jobs, and they aren’t the most fun, but they normally pay close to $20 per hour. Not the best way to spend your weekend, but you will be able to get new headshots made.
If you are like most actors, than you will want to get an agent, yet, if you don’t live in a huge city, you may think that there aren’t any agents near you. Well, you would be surprised to find out that you most likely have a talent agency within fifty miles of your home.
Yes, it may be quite a drive, but it is well worth it once you start auditioning. So what type of jobs should you expect to get when with an agency that isn’t in a large city? Well, you will more than likely be auditioning for various industrials. An industrial usually is a training video for a corporation, or some type of video aide that is used for various purposes.
Just because you don’t live in a major city doesn’t mean that you can’t find work where you live. It may not be the type of “dream work” that you long to do, however, you will be able to find work that will help you grow as an actor and an artist.
Continuing your growth as a performer is something that you must constantly be doing. I have learned not to wait for opportunity to come to me, but I must rush after opportunity. If you do the same, you will find yourself extremely busy within your local arts community.
