How could a loving, forgiving God demand death from an imperfect person? I can, perhaps, understand death for the major sins like murder, but for working on the Sabbath or adultery, even lying? Ah, you say, that was all Old Testament stuff. We live in the New Testament age with Jesus and he came with grace and that has all changed. God changed, tolerance is the new way.
Romans 6:23 – “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” NIV
Perhaps God is smarter than many give him credit for. Our society is spiraling downward. We are dying, spiritually and physically, as individuals and as a society. We are well on our way to death. Perhaps if we held sin in higher contempt, perhaps if we had less tolerance for sin and sought more repentance and a higher set of morals, then things would be different. The only real protection that we have, as a person and as a society, is to view sin as the evil that it is.
2 Chronicles 7:14 – “if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” NIV
A society that has no moral absolutes, a society not grounded in high moral standards is a society in chaos. It is a society that will die a slow death, a society that will be on its death bed before it realizes that it is sick. Sin is evil and just as sin left inside the heart of a Christian will kill his life with Christ and consume him so will the sins of this nation. It will kill the nation from the inside out. That is our greatest security threat.
We are a country that has its roots in Judea-Christian values. That is the truth whether popular or not. Did our founding fathers get it all right – no. Did they make mistakes – yes. But did we prosper – yes. Capitalism and democracy will only strive when the leaders of our country, both public and private sector – hold themselves to a high moral selfless standard.
I want a separation of church and state – I do not want government running religion. That does not however imply that government cannot nor should not be influenced by our Judeo-Christian values. Government and its rules and laws is our written set of morals, they are what we say is right and wrong, but they are not how we serve God. They must continue to reflect Christian values. We need to stop being afraid of the Ten Commandments, they are a Judeo-Christian set of morals and they must also still be our set of morals and they are a historical part of who we are. From a society standpoint, it is not the type of religion that is important anyways, it is the morals that are evident from the people that shape society.
This does not exclude other religions, this does not force worship to our God, it is but the standard that we judge our laws and rules and behaviors by. For without a standard – then chaos exists. The rules change each time the control of government changes – right and wrong surely is more than just who has more votes in this election season.
The wages of sin is truly death and it is more than a spiritual death, or a sentence at our death, it is also a physical death for our life on earth, for our society. And more important, when we allow it to happen, it is also the death penalty for others in our society that does not know Jesus.
Look around on the buildings in Washington, D.C., read our founding fathers letters, look on your money and read the pledge, we are a country that is Christian at its core. We don’t kick out or ignore those that have other faiths or decide what kind of Christian a person chooses to be. But we do need to return to the One Truth that we were founded on, stand for the basic moral values of the Bible and lead the world through the 21st century, instead of just joining the rest of the world for the ride.
We are the world’s melting pot because we accept all, just as Jesus accepts all that will come to him. With God’s truth being the pot, stirred by Jesus and kept warm by the fire of the Holy Spirit, it is a recipe for a great society. A society that is rich in many different cultures and traditions. Yet we have allowed the recipe to change. We have altered the very shape and nature of the pot by allowing God to be removed from our society. We have taken the salt (Christians) from the recipe because we were told it would be better for us.
The result has become a society that barely resembles what it started out as. All should be welcome, all our free to lead their life here, but here are our values and that is the basis that we will govern our society from. Period. To deviate from that and to allow sin to run rampant through society is a death sentence for our society. Wake up church and let’s return to God’s truth as our standard of rule, in our churches and in our communities and in our nation.
The chemistry and the basic makeup of our society are on the verge of death. A death caused by the sin that has been allowed to stay in the pot while the salt has been taken out. You see the only protection that society has is to resist sin, save the sinner and return to the high moral absolutes of God’s Word. Otherwise death is unavoidable. Sin and death or God and life – it is your choice, but not only for you but for our nation as well. Amen.
