Bionic Woman premieres Wednesday, September 26, 9/8 C on NBC. An updated version of the Lindsay Wagner series, which ran from 1976-1978, Bionic Woman is about the post-accident life of Jaime Sommers, played by Michelle Ryan of BBC’s EastEnders.
In the beginning of the series, Jaime is a brilliant college dropout who is struggling as a bartender and surrogate mom to her rebellious teenage sister. Then a horrendous car accident leaves Jaime near death and her only hope of survival is a cutting-edge, top-secret surgery that hands her a brand new life and a debt to repay. The surgery leaves her with extraordinary new strength and other artificially enhanced gifts. Now Jaime must figure out how her new skills can be used to the best of her ability and embrace her new bionic identity.
Photos from the pilot published in the UK newspaper Daily Mail reveal that Jaime will receive a bionic ear, as she had in the original series, and a bionic eye, like Steve Austin had in The 6 Million Dollar Man, along with bionic legs and a bionic right arm.
The surgery is performed by Jaime’s boyfriend, Will, a bionic scientist played by Chris Bowers, who guest starred in the television dramas Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and RescueMe.
Will’s boss, Jonas, is played by Miguel Ferrer, who co-starred in the television series Crossing Jordan, and movies such as Traffic, Blank Check, Another Stakeout and Point of No Return. So far, Ferrer is only scheduled to appear in the pilot. Jonas is the director of the Bionics program, so it is possible he will guest star in more upcoming episodes.
Jaime’s sister, Becca Sommers, is played by Lucy Hale, who made a guest appearance on the television shows The O.C. and Drake & Josh. Mae Whitman (Chicago Hope, Hope Floats) was originally cast as Becca. The character was originally written as hearing-impaired and resentful of her sister. She was rewritten as a “budding hacker” who may “open a channel” to help Jaime restore the relationship with their parents. IMDB.com’s description of the pilot mentions that their parents have died. This should be an interesting twist to the updated version.
The premier will feature Will’s bionic prototype, Sarah, played by Katee Sackoff (Battlestar Gallactica). Sarah is Jaime’s nemesis and the two will have a large battle in the premiere that exposes their weaknesses. Sarah is scheduled to appear as a recurring character.
Bionic Woman also stars Will Yun Lee (Witchblade, Elektra) as Jae, the specialized operations leader; and Molly Price (Third Watch) as Ruth, Jonas’ second-in-command.
