Living in a rather quiet if not remote area of Central Florida, it remains difficult to locate a place that personifies the essence of the Sunshine State. Most of the time, when I inform others that I live in Florida, their eyes light up and they give a “you are so lucky” gaze in my direction. Well, that would be true in certain areas of Florida. Miami and Jacksonville both promise a thrilling experience. But the Daytona area nightlife remains quite subdued. Searching high and low, it took me a couple of years to discover a diamond in the rough, located just minutes from the Daytona Beach Pier. The Ocean Deck has a very high energy, good time feeling that is hard to replicate anywhere else. Situated on the beach itself, one can enjoy several unique “fresh catch” entrees while admiring the picturesque view of one of the best beaches in the United States.
Not into the whole fish scene? That certainly doesn’t matter, because The Ocean Deck has all tastes covered. A potpourri of other specials include their mouth-watering New York Strip, Top Sirloin, and grilled breasted chicken smothered and marinated in an unbelievable rasta sauce. A particular warning regarding the rasta sauce: be prepared! This is not your grandmother’s recipe. It will set off the fire alarm in your head and clear out your sinuses, but isn’t that what you want in a hot, zesty marinade? One can even purchase The Ocean Deck’s rasta sauce in their quaint gift shop or on-line if you forget after a fulfilling meal. The options are certainly yours, and although the price remains a bit high, you will not regret the taste-bud treat.
Although The Ocean Deck is not exactly considered a family restaurant, they have your child covered as well with a great variety on the children’s menu. Portions on the children’s menu are relatively large, so doggy-bag the leftovers to enjoy the following day.
If your thirsty, help yourself to the bar area and a newly enclosed air-conditioned dining room. Watch the big game or several small ones on the multiple big-screen TV’s that surround and engulf you in the action. Choose from dozens of beers, margaritas, or other mixed drinks. Leave your problems at work behind as the robust crowd goes wild!
Still not enough? Do you have the need to dance the night away? Entertainment at The Ocean Deck does not just occur once or twice a week, like other establishments in the Volusia County area. You can expect a live band on a nightly basis, featuring local talents of modern rock, reggae, acoustic, or alternative. Unlike the areas local clubs, people are not packed in like sardines and sweating all over you either. The atmosphere remains cool and casual; it is a perfect spot to meet new friends and hang out with old acquaintances. You can even check what live entertainment will be playing there before you go on their updated on-line website.
And if you are a college student craving excitement during spring break, (and I speak for myself when I admit to missing those days) very few places can rival the excitement and intensity at The Ocean Deck. Expect hosted midnight beach concerts as well as Florida favorites like limbo and wet t-shirt contests. It should be noted that during spring break week, the common “cool and casual” attitude of The Ocean Deck gets amped up!
Before you leave, (and particularly if you are on vacation and will not be returning anytime soon) be sure to stop in the gift shop for your choice of apparel, gift baskets, or other Ocean Deck accessories. Gift certificates are also available and never expire. But instead of wearing your newly acquired t-shirt, hang it on the bedroom wall as a reminder of truly savory Mahi-Mahi, the soft beach breeze, and harmonious, melodic reggae rhythm.
