Over the past 5 years popular trading card games, also known by TCG, have swept the globe. Although these games have been around much longer, it appears to have increased in reputation and appeal over the past years. may be a familiar title to many. This is TCG would have to take the title for holding its popularity for the longest amount of time. Running strong after over a decade, this is a favorite for many card game players. These cards have a vast price range and can start from as low as $1 up to the $100’s. The basis for this TCG revolves around the fantasy realm, featuring mystical creatures, magic, and powerful tools to help you achieve victory.
Magic the Gathering
Following Magic the Gathering, you may remember the craze that was nearly in every store. Pokemon TCG was a huge hit, mainly among the younger crowd, but still pulling in an adult interest. It’s catchy and colorful collectible cards were based on the Anime television show Pokemon with an amazing catch phrase “Gotta’ Catch ‘Em All”. And that’s just what many young adults did.
Prior to sweeping the U.S. by storm, an extremely popular TCG known as Yu-Gi-Oh! took flight in Japan. Known for its debut on television, this has become a favorite card game for all ages. You are the controller of powerful beasts, and must defeat your opponents “life points” to win. Yu-Gi-Oh! has advanced greatly across the globe, now offering many large tournaments players may choose to enter. It has become so greatly desired to play that there is now even a World Tournament where players from across the globe come together and battle for the championship title of this TCG. However, if you’re looking for something a bit smaller in scale, there are many local and regional tournaments scattered about North America. One of the more popular companies you might have heard of is Unity Entertainment. They host a variety of tournaments in many U.S. states.
Since the uprising of Yu-Gi-Oh! many other TCG games have come into play. Marvel VS., World of WarCraft, Dragonball Z, and a variety of others. Some prove worthy and will end up in tournaments as well, while others are rarely heard of. There are so many Anime and television shows being made into a TCG it truly is hard to compete on the market. Game play in a TCG has a great deal to do with how catchy it will become. The theme of the cards is also a main factor. You can’t take a show no one is familiar with and make it into a card game expecting it to be a hit. The product typically has to become popular prior to being manufactured into cards.
If you enjoy strategy, then I would highly recommend trying out a “Starter Deck” with a friend from a desired TCG. They are both challenging and entertaining to play. Starter decks are a great buy for beginners featuring basic and well balanced cards to play with.
