Hilton Head Island, South Carolina is one of the more popular vacation destinations in the Southeastern United States. Hilton Head Island is home of over 12 miles of beach, nature preserves, shopping, dining, and so much more. If you are thinking of visiting Hilton Head Island on vacation or just taking a weekend trip, I thought I would give you a few pros and cons of visiting the island. I have been visiting Hilton Head Island since 2003.
One of the greatest advantages Hilton Head Island has to other beach destinations is the natural beauty of the island. The strict building codes and environmentally friendly construction make for a distinct nature feel that other beach destinations do not have. Buildings are set back from the road, no bright or flashy colors are used on buildings, and there are strict sign restrictions laws as well. This allow for an island that is full of development to still look beautiful.
Another great thing about HHI is the dining options. The area is full of great restaurants that are sure to please all types of tastes. Obviously, there are many great options when it comes to seafood. Some of my favorite seafood restaurants include The Old Oyster Factory, The Crazy Crab, Red Fish, and Charley’s Crab. Some other great restaurants for people who are not as into seafood include Sticky Fingers, The Salty Dog Cafe, Marley’s, and Kurama.
Hilton Head is also a great place for families. I have been to other popular beach vacation destinations that can have a large crowd of people who want to party. If you want to take your kids to a place where you don’t have to worry about seeing drunk college kids, Hilton Head Island is that place. I love the family atmosphere that the island offers. There are many great activities on the island for families including dolphin tours, banana boats, concerts, and much more.
If you are an avid golfer, then this place might be a great destination for your summer vacation. HHI is very famous for its many golf courses. There are over 20 major courses on Hilton Head Island such as The Sea Pines Resort which offers the Harbour Town Golf Links, Sea Marsh Golf Course, and Ocean Golf Course. Hilton Head Island is also home of the Verizon Heritage Classic Golf Tournament. A few great sites to check out for golf on HHI include www.golfisland.com and www.golfhiltonheadisland.net.
One con, that may be a pro to others (including myself) is that if you are looking for a party location, this place may not be for you. HHI is very tame compared to places such as Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and Panama City Beach, Florida. You will not see people driving along in cars cruising the strip.
Hilton Head Island is more of a relaxing destination. You will not find a lot of the other attractions that you would find at other beach destinations. Hilton Head isn’t overrun with mini golf, go carts, tattoo parlors, or bungee jumping towers. If a person is into attractions like these, they would be better off somewhere else.
The beaches of HHI are not the most beautiful beaches in the world either. If you like the white sandy beaches and emerald colored waters that places like Panama City Beach offer, you will be very disappointed with Hilton Head Island.
These are just a few of the pros and cons of taking a vacation or weekend trip to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Overall, I believe that even with the few cons that Hilton Head Island has, it is still one of my favorite vacation destinations. I would highly recommend giving this place a shot.
