After the first few weeks the LSU Tigers look like one of the best teams in the nation and the favorite to win the SEC. The Florida Gator looks good as well, although they haven’t had much of a challenge yet. Both the LSU Tigers and Florida Gators have a lot of talent though and any one player isn’t going to completely change their season.
There are other teams in the SEC though that depend greatly on one player. These players might not end up as the Player of the Year at the end of the 2007 season but might very well be the Most Valuable Player on their team or even in the SEC.
After the Florida Gators won the National Championship last year with help from their freshmen quarterback Tim Tebow, many fans regarded Tim Tebow as the best quarterback in the SEC. But those that pay attention more closely will tell you that the best quarterback in the SEC is Andre Woodson. Andre Woodson led the Kentucky Wildcats to their best season since 1984 last year and the Kentucky Wildcats could upset a team or two in the SEC.
Many people have Darren McFadden as their favorite for the Heisman Trophy. As the Razorbacks’ leading rusher, sometimes receiver and sometimes passer Darren McFadden will get enough touches to be the Heisman winner and how well he plays will certainly go a long way in deciding how well the Razorbacks play.
The Kentucky Wildcats and the Vanderbilt Commodores have been automatic wins in the SEC for some time but both teams have some upset potential now. The one player that is most important to Vanderbilt is their star receiver Earl Bennett. Earl Bennett leads the SEC in receptions, total receiving yards, receiving yards per game and receiving touchdowns.
Erik Ainge had some good passing numbers last year but with Chris Leak leading his team to the National Championship and Jamarcus Russell putting up great numbers Erik Ainge became an after thought. If Erik Ainge has a good season he could lead Tennessee to the SEC Championship and could battle Andre Woodson as the leading passer in the league..
John Parker Wilson has not looked good at the helm of the Alabama Crimson Tide offense. Nick Saban should thank his lucky stars that he has Terry Grant running the ball. Terry Grant is first in the SEC in rushing yards and in rushing touchdowns and his success could determine how well the Alabama offense plays this season.
