On July 2nd the movie Transformers hits movie theaters. As part of the advertising you will be sure to see all kinds of Transformers merchandise at stores including action figures. Do not be fooled by these new, updated and shiny toys though; nothing beats the original line of Transformers toys. Here are the best Transformer toys ever, all of them from the original Generation 1 series.
10. Omega Supreme
Every child likes to have some kind of base for all their action figures so the Transformers creators had to make a Transformer that turned into an entire base. Omega Supreme turns into a rocket base (with a track that lights up), a rocket and a tank. Since Omega Supreme can turn into an entire base he is obviously very large in his transformed state.
The original Starscream Transformers action figure doesn’t have any gimmicks to it but Starscream is just a classic character in Transformers history. Starscream also turns into a jet, which is always pretty cool.
When the Transformers were first created kids couldn’t believe there were robots that turned into airplanes, trucks and cars. So I can’t imagine what kids’ reactions were when they saw Blitzwing. Blitzwing turns from a robot, to an airplane, but that’s not all. He also turns into a tank too! I didn’t have many Transformers myself but I did have Blitzwing and he was easily one my favorites.
Like Starscream, Mirage doesn’t have anything special about his figure. Mirage is just a cool figure because he turns into a sweet blue and white Indy racecar. It also doesn’t hurt that Mirage was just one of my favorite characters in Transformers because he could turn invisible.
Megatron is one of the classic Transformers toys and characters. Megatron is the leader of the Decepticons and transforms into a gun. The Megatron toy is also one of the most rare figures because it was pulled off the shelves because of the complaints that children were getting toys that turned into guns. Even though at the time there were entire aisles of toy guns. This figure will set you back about $500 on eBay and that’s only for an opened and used figure.
5. Optimus Prime
Optimus Prime is another classic Transformer. I was never a big fan of the Optimus Prime character but you can’t argue that Optimus Prime isn’t a cool figure. Optimus Prime is larger than all the other regular Transformers both in robot form and in vehicle from so it made him seem special.
As I mentioned before, kids were amazed when they first saw Blitzwing turn into a tank and an airplane. That wasn’t amazing as Sixshot though. Like all the other Transformers Sixshot started off in robot form but then he could transform into five other objects for a total of six transformations. Sixshot could transform into an armored carrier, a ramming tank, a star cruiser, a laser pistol and some kind of winged wolf creature.
Early on the Constructicons were introduced. The Constructicons were a group of Transformers that transformed from robots into construction vehicles. These figures were special though because if had the entire group of figures they could all combine into one giant figure called Devastator. Due to the size of Devastator this was among kids’ favorite Transformers but I’m sure it was the parents’ least favorite since they had to buy all the figures separately.
Some of the gimmicks Transformers used were nice but just not quite enough for a couple of the classics. One of those is Soundwave. Soundwave turned into a boom box so you could leave him on your dresser transformed and he would actually look like he belonged there. There were also other Transformers like Ravage, Rumble, and Laserbeak that transformed into tapes and could be put inside of Soundwave.
The creators were obviously on to something when they created the Transformers. What would a kid possibly want more than a robot that turned into a car or a plane? There is only one thing: a robot that turns into a dinosaur. Yes, there is just something mysteriously compelling about dinosaurs. At a very young age kids just love dinosaurs for some reason and I was no different. My family didn’t have a whole lot of money so I actually only owned one of the original classic Transformers and the one I chose was Grimlock, the leader of the Dinobots, and the coolest dinosaur of them all, the T-Rex.
