This is an extremely basic shape to work with but there are so many different ways that you can decorate it. The images that Wilton includes with the pan are only suggestions; you can use any method of decoration that you like. In fact, this is one of the best cake molds for kids to work with. They can add almost anything to the body of the cupcake and it will still look great. Before you do anything you have to grease the inside of it so that it releases evenly when it is done baking. You only need one box of cake or brownie mix to make this; if you want to try something different, add some sprinkles or colored sugar to the batter. As it bakes it will break down inside the mix and you will end up with little color bursts throughout the cake.
Allow the cake to cool completely before you start decorating it. There are no detailed sections to the bottom of the cupcake to simulate the folds of a cupcake liner so you will have to add those by hand but they are not necessary. To add in the lines just frost or ice then use the back end of a butter knife to draw in the lines. You can also use an ice pick for this; press the ice pick into the bottom section so you will have completely straight lines. Another option is to use licorice. This works out great if you are decorating the cake with pieces of candy. Use licorice strips or laces but make sure that you have allowed them to become completely straight before trying to place them on the cake. Making a candy themed cake is fun and kids can help out with it. You don’t need to buy anything special for it, just use whatever you have around the house.
Some of the other ways that you can decorate this include:
Halloween: Make it black and orange and use Halloween themed edible icing decorations to accent it. You can also use plastic spiders around the edges.
Valentine’s Day: Use red and pink frosting for the top and bottom then add candy hearts, cupids and other romantic candies to embellish it.
Mini Cakes: Decorate this any way you like then use a mini muffin or tart pan to make mini versions that you can use around the edges of it.
Cupcake of Doom: Great for a 40th or 50th birthday party. Use black or red tint in the batter then frost with black icing. You can also add some plastic bones to the sides.
Princess Party: Pink and purple frosting looks great on this. Add Barbie, HannahMontana or Fairy themed accents. You can also add pink color tint to the batter for an extra sweet presentation.
One of the cooler things that you can do with this mold is to make it into a 3-D cake. Just make two cakes and ‘cement’ them together using icing or frosting. You will want to make sure that the bottoms are even and flat or you might run into some presentation problems. This makes for an incredible looking dessert or birthday cake but it is extremely easy to make and a lot of fun to decorate. If you are going to make this please start with a solid base. You won’t want to try moving this once you have applied the icing or frosting to the middle because it could crack or split apart.
Please note, this is not the same pan as the Dimensions Giant Cupcake Pan (2105-5038). That is larger in size and costs about three times as much as this one.
