Senior citizens will often find it hard to get around and they could use all the help that they can get. I put together a list of things that you can do to help them with their worries.
My grandmother turned eighty-one this year and there is nothing that I wouldn’t do for her. My grandfather is eight-six years old, so I understand what a lot of senior citizens go through. Neither one of them are in a nursing facilities and they both seem to be taken care of themselves pretty good. The problem that they most often face, is that it is getting harder for my grandmother to drive and my grandfather has been legally blind for years.
There are a number of senior citizens that could use your help, some of them may not admit it but it is still nice when you offer to help them out. Since my grandparents are unable to drive themselves, I offer a hand and do a lot of the driving for them. The both have in home care, that requires a home health aid to come over and do a few of their chores and to run them errands. The home health aid only comes on certain days and there is usually something that they will either forget to pay, or something that they forgot to get. I go over there and help them out with a ride on the days when there is no one there to help them.
I have not met a senior citizen who didn’t enjoy the extra company. I use to work in a nursing home and the elderly people would always want me to spend my entire shift sitting in there with them. Being a companion when they are alone, can be one of the most thoughtfully things that you could do for them.
Take them out to dinner or cook a meal for them. My grandmother would often complain about her arthritis bothering her when she tried to cook. She was no longer able to do the things that she once loved because of the arthritis. I got arthritis at an early age, I know what it can feel like to have it. This is why I offered to help them out. I cooked for them whenever I could or I would bring them a plate over from my families dinner. Sometimes, when my husband would work, I would feel like going to a restaurant but I hated to go alone. I started taking them with me whenever I felt the urge to eat lunch somewhere.
There are a lot of nice gestures that you can do that will help out a senior citizen and these are only a few of them to get you started. Whenever I think about the senior citizens, I always think of the way that I would want to be treated when I become one. They mainly just want someone to spend time with them and to acknowledge their presence.
