Pests, we have all been there, dealt with that, and got the t-shirt. Say you have just made a delicious chocolate cake, and while icing it, you have to step away. If you’re gone too long, will you come back to find ants crawling all over your cake? Or maybe, you have entered your kitchen or living room late at night, and spotted a fuzzy friend running across the floor.
These are just a few examples of how uninvited pests, can slowly start taking over a house, making your house, theirs. However, fear not, there is something you can do to stop the infestation. It is up to you though, to follow through with some type of preventative plan, to protect your family and home.
#1. Clean Up, Clean Up, Everybody Do Your Share.
One of the best ways to keep ants, mice, roaches and other bugs out of your home, is to keep it clean. A few important facts to remember, though. Pick up all food off of the floor, especially if you have small children, as they are more apt to drop it. Remove food and snacks from your kitchens’ cabinet’s at night, and place them in sealed containers or in the refrigerator. Remembering to pick up food, means that the pests won’t have an all-you-can-eat-buffet when they come to your home.
#2. Stop ‘Em At The Door And The Windows.
Now that you are being more vigilant about leaving food lying about, it’s time to block their point of entrance. Be sure to caulk or fill all holes, especially the ones that lead to the outside. Even small thin holes can provide entry for a pesky pests. A few helpful hints: If you see a trail of ants, follow it and spray where they are coming in and out of from. As for mice, follow their “evidence trail”, and you will probably find where they are entering and exiting as well.
#3. Treat Indoors And Out, And The Bugs Will Go Away.
There are great sprays that can be bought at your local hardware store, that will treat mice, ants, roaches, and other pests. Most of these sprays are able to be used indoors and out, but some are location specific. For ants outdoors, grab a bag of Orkin powder, and spread the contents on the mounds around your yard. For indoor pests, spray around your windows, doors, and in the attic and basement. If you are not sure what certain pests are , or how to safely treat them, call in a professional.
Keeping your home clean and putting up all food, will go along way to keeping pests out of your home. Also in the Spring and Fall, it would be a great idea to treat your home, inside and out. Maybe then, you will be able to live in peace, content in the knowledge that all of your little “friends” have left the building.
