Today many women are waiting until their late thirties or early forties to start a family. This is because women are focusing on their careers when they are younger or because it took them longer to find the perfect partner. If you are a woman that is over 40 and faced with becoming a parent for the first time then don’t panic. There are tips that can help you to stay healthy during and after your pregnancy and tips for helping you to be a super cool mom.
Tip #1 – Prenatal Care and Monitoring Is a Must
As a mature mom you will be automatically classified as a high risk pregnancy. In order to protect your health and the health of your baby you will need to get more prenatal care than the average mom-to-be. You will also need to have a few more tests done for things like genetic abnormalities and pregnancy related health problems. Fortunately, with good prenatal care you can easily navigate your way to a safe and natural birth.
Tip #2 – Low Impact Exercise Will Help
Staying physically fit during your pregnancy is going to be both beneficial for you and your pregnancy. You need to talk with your doctor about what types of exercise are right for you and your health concerns. However, walking, swimming and special pregnancy exercise classes are all good options. The key will be to avoid dangerous sports, avoid high impact workouts and to avoid exercises that aggravate medical conditions that you may have.
Tip #3 – Good Nutrition
Good nutrition is important for all expectant moms. However, as a mature mom it is even more important. You will want to make sure you take a prenatal vitamin, that you get enough calcium in your diet and that you avoid things that are bad for your baby like drugs, alcohol, caffeine and other stimulants. You will need to make adjustments to your diet as your pregnancy advances. Most women will find that they go through food aversion phases where one or more types of food make them nauseas even if they just see it.
Tip #4 – Relax and Enjoy Your Kids
As a mature mom you may be worried that you won’t be able to bond with your kids or be able to understand them. This is a worry that most moms have regardless of their age. The key is to just relax and enjoy being with your kids. Parents rarely understand their kids and that’s okay. Just offer them your unconditional love, make sure that the lines of communication are open and that you spend quality time with them.
Tip #5 – Be an Active Parent
If you want a great parenting experience then be an active parent. Take an interest in what your kids are doing and what they are interested in. Volunteer at their school, do things together as a family and show up to their school events and sports events.
